Hello everyone.

First of all, I would like to say this is not a "QQ my guides dropped in rank" thread. If I make comments about my own guides, please don't take it as such. They're just examples from my personal experience.

I like the whole idea of "giving more opportunity for new guides", which was the main intention of the changes, but I don't think the new ranking system was implemented correctly. Guides that are strictly better are getting ranked lower than other guides. By strictly better I mean more recently updated, higher % upvotes, more upvotes, more recent upvotes and more views. These are all stats we can agree upon that indicate a guide is 'good'.

An example: One of my guides (I won't say which one to prevent witch hunting and stuff) has a large % of upvotes, most of which were fairly recent, it was updated for the latest patch and has a decent amount of views/comments. Another guide for the same champion has had less than 5 votes (it still has the NEW status) for over a month now, it hasn't been updated in a month, it has 5 times less views and no comments. Yet this guide is ranked higher. Note that both guides are marked as 'HIGH ELO'. Why is this happening? I think we can all agree this isn't supposed to happen at all. Again, I don't mean to complain about my own guides, this is just an example.

Another thing I don't like is giving priorities to high ranked and pro/guest authors (even though I'm benefiting from it myself by being plat). BEING GOOD AT THE GAME DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN WRITE GOOD GUIDES. People can have amazing game knowledge, but still be bronze/gold/silver because they might not have the best reaction time/mechanics or maybe they just don't play ranked that much. Writing good guides requires many different attributes:
  • Being a good writer in general.
  • Being a good designer (a nice-looking guide doesn't mean it's good, but it's always a bonus).
  • Having good game knowledge.
  • ...
None of these have anything to do with your actual rating in the game. There might be a correlation, but that doesn't say anything about individuals. Let the users decide for themselves which guides they like. Would you rather have a 3 month old guide with 5 lines of text and only one item build by a 'special guest author', or a 4000 lines guide by a gold player that was updated yesterday?

Conclusion (TL;DR): The new rating system for guides is terrible. It has many flaws and doesn't give equal opportunity to everyone. It is based on luck and elo, more than writing good guides.

The "stickied" guides have already been changed to only include guest author guides, and high elo guides being stickied had nothing to do with the rating system change.

The % score (I believe) is the overall flat percentage score of the guide. So, an older guide could have a lot of upvotes from a different time, but its recent upvotes percentage could be worse. We may remove the percent score from everywhere since it seems to be confusing people, since it's not directly related to the current score of the guide.

The current score is still using the bayesian scoring system, just with a smaller pool of votes. A "new" guide can overtake another guide, but the other guide would have to have a significant number of downvotes in their recent score.

If you want to pm me or post the guides you are talking about, we can still check it out. The "new" guide may be bugged, or the champion may be unpopular.

We also have to keep in mind that our opinion of what guide is "best" is biased, and MOBAFire is based on the idea of the community deciding what the best guide is. People disagree about which guide is best or worst all the time.

I'm not sure what you think is more fair about the old system as opposed to this one. Could you explain yourself a bit more? I hope since I've explained the system a bit more that you are not as unhappy with it.

I personally don't see any problems with the current voting system. It gives new guides a much more fair chance into getting #1 while old guides can actually drop from #1 for once.

One thing I really dislike though, is how scouted guides no longer show up in the stickied list. Why not? It takes away all the purpose of scouting because you can't see if a guide is scouted or not in the guides page.
