It's alright if you did horrible. Of course it is your first time, there is nothing wrong with doing bad and no one's perfect. The thing with supports is that you need bush control and vision.
This is what supports mainly do, but if you went into a different lane like top, mid or jungle. Then i see why you did so terribly. however if you did support, check leona guides here on mobafire, there's a lot of great ones out there.
But the usual items a support should have is : Wards, philosopher's stone,
Crystalline Flask , Shurelya's Battlesong.
Also based on who you have, I suggest you go and learn Tristana or Varus. They're both great ADCs, again the number one thing i advice you to practice on first is last hitting minions. Don't push the lane by last hitting and make sure you're always in the proper position. Don't get yourself caught offguard.

Have you thought about using Karthus? I use him fairly regularly with good results. He is a little difficult to master, but with practice, you'll have the strong potential to be pulling of all number of combo kills.. even penta! I'm Breaker of Faith in game.
