Nidalee is set to have a rework in the not too distant future and RiotRepertoir has already released some early information on it. I thought it would be a good idea to get the opinion of how the information that we know will change Nidalee’s playstyle. I reached out to Rinsel, the 2nd highest non-guest author guide for Nidalee on MOBAFire. His guide focuses on AP Nidalee and features a great matchups section, general solo queue advice, and a section on how to carry; definitely check it out if you are interested in playing the shapeshifter.

So thank you to Rinsel for the insight on what he thinks will happen to Nidalee!

Q. Taken from RiotRepertoir:

“Nidalee’s current pattern of nuking from very long range and being uncatchable is problematic for the game. It creates scenarios where there is no reasonable strategy that can be used to beat her, and it edges out most of the interactive gameplay we try to encourage.” Do you agree with this?

A. Rinsel: The current pattern for Nidalee is a little broken but without a front line or beyond extraordinary skill she crumbles VERY fast. So there's counters to her, it's just that people are THAT good at playing her it seems like there aren't any possible ways to counter her. When in reality it's incredibly easy to counter her. (Maybe not her team, but her as an individual.)

Q. Nidalee’s current passive, Prowl, increases her movement speed by 15% in brushes. The proposed change is 10% for 2 seconds, increased to X% toward visible enemy champions in a large radius. Also, hitting enemy champions with Javelin Toss and Bushwack causes her to Hunt them, which marks them for 3 seconds giving Nidalee’s Prowl bonus movement speed and Nidalee’s next Cougar ability against anyone marked will consue the debuff for an empowerment effect. How do you think this passive rework will affect Nidalee’s playstyle?

A. With the new passive, I really feel like people who are good at playing her will really be able to capitalize on her early game and then carry on into the mid game. They won’t need to worry about landing spears because they'll already be ahead and they can crush the game. But if you do bad, it really will end up being your downfall because you can't cougar stomp a team fight because you can't rely on spears to snipe before picking off targets. So overall just picking Nidalee should be a high risk - high reward.

Q. The Hunted debuff will also add actions to all of her cougar abilities. Takedown will deal additional damage, Pounce can be used to jump to Hunted enemies at about double the normal range, Swipe resets Pounce’s cooldown to a set value if it is currently above that value, and Aspect of the Cougar gives Nidalee vision of all hunted targets. What are your thoughts on these proposed changes? Will the focus on Cougar form make AP Nidalee no longer viable, or can AP Nidalee players tweak their playstyle to take advantage of these bonuses?

A. Really, the changes seem to lean ALOT towards bruiser which I find really strange (even though I do use it a lot) it basically gives her incredible mobility to stick to. Kind of reminds me of Riven, I'm not sure why though. As for what AP players can do, you really have to be good. It sounds stupid, but it's true. Because not being able to rely on your spears to handle objectives for you, you have to step up and fully understand how MUCH exactly you can do compared to your enemy. Because with the skill set, you’re similar to Lee Sin, you can scale really hard when ahead but if you’re behind you kind of lack and you’re not going to be much help to your team. So players are going to have to think about their spears and really keep track of how the rotations on the enemy team are going at times.

Q. Since Riot is trying to get away from the long range Javelin Toss and escape playstyle which is so common on Nidalee. So of course there will be changes made to the ability with the base damage and ability power ratio reduced. However, as you level up Aspect of the Cougar, you decrease the cooldown on Javelin Toss. How do you think this change will affect the poke playstyle?

A. Changing the cool down so that it goes down with cougar form levels emphasizes her scaling potential and I feel like it's putting a lot into cougar form. But I feel like it will also encourage people to get CDR on Nidalee, especially for the early game and then late game scaling.

Q. RiotRepertoir commented on how he envisioned a teamfight to take place with her new kit:

“In a strictly teamfight scenario, she will still be a strong poker (just fewer instances of hitting 1 Javelin Toss and winning a fight), but she will also have opportunities where she can choose to engage.

The basic gist of things is that she sets up fights in human while waiting for moments to go in, and when she makes that choice, she goes into Cougar do execute good damage. As a fight progresses, she makes use of her low form swap cooldown to do whatever the situation calls for: hunt a new target, pop a heal on herself or an ally, trap somewhere for vision, or stay in cougar for damage.

I know that's really general, but I think people will be able to pick it up really naturally once they get their hands on it."

With what you know about the proposed rework and all the knowledge you have of playing the current version of Nidalee, do you see teamfights going like this? Do you think this is a good playstyle for Nidalee or will other champions be able to do what she does and do it in a more efficient manner now?

A. So I mean with this new rework I REALLY feel like AP bruiser Nidalee will come up to shine because it seems like with the AP scaling (Is it still there?) on her takedown you’re going to be able to do some serious nuke-age (Is that a word?) but you’re going to be a little tanky to survive in fights. Kind of similar to how the Riven changes happened where she kind of went tanky instead of straight damage. So it's really going to change her build path, most likely, but her play style (For people who really play her a lot) will remain unchanged. Because when you’re ahead as Nidalee, you know that you can land a spear and kill someone, but you can do similar damage and 1v2 an ADC and support by simply swapping into cougar form. This new change will increase the amount that Nidalee's will want to roam into other lanes, despite the fact that they do well or poorly in their lane. So if Nidalee does stay relevant by getting a little tanky her spot is still pretty secure.

Q. Within the current meta-game, Nidalee is heavily valued because of her ability to poke and move around the map which makes her a great tower sieger and a formidable anti-siege. Do you feel this playstyle will remove her from that niche and allow another champion to rise into it and feel as overpowered as Nidalee did?

A. If AP Bruiser Nidalee fails, then she's going to either become a top laner, or get thrown into the garbage completely. Because currently champions like Syndra and Karma are really coming up into a role that they have poke but also a TON of damage when they want to engage. So if Nidalee isn't there to stop it, those champions are going to start dominating and a change in the meta will occur.
