this is a good strategy and they probably wont ask that much at the start since you will probably buy upgrades, keeping it as a ensured profit for the future.
Problem seems to be when something better and completely different from PCI-E (or other important achitecture) comes by, making this obsolete due to unupgradability (new words, plis).

What worries me about this is the bandwidth they will be able to achieve between the motherboard/CPU compartment and the GPU. If it's not at least up to PCI-E 3.0 standards it will be a pretty large hindrance in the performance of the device.
I'm also worried about the cooling. This seems like it would be hard to cool effectively compared to a standard chassis.
