it doesnt really matter to me lol.. i think adding space for the webcam on top of the iphone is a little much but.. maybe there is a reason for it? im no phone engineer but there's probably hardware crammed into every divet of space under the screen.
Well, with today's technology I'm pretty sure it's possible to make the screens cover more of the device. The Galaxy S3 does a pretty good job of that already.
"every now and again you come across a game that has so little emotional connection to who you are that you end up standing there, gazing at the screen and saying "I'm just pressing buttons and my life has no meaning,"" - Colin Campbell
I dun curr about the size, I just care if I can communicate. I do care about the size of the phone and the screen, but not enough to do anything about it :3

"it's just weird" nice reasoning.
The phone doesn't have to be big, but the more of the front of the phone that is covered by a screen, the better the user experience.

I'm more concerned with the size of the screen than the size of the wasted space. If I can't easily reach each corner of the screen by moving only my thumb then the screen is too big. If my thumb can go further than the screen then the screen corners then the screen is too small. I think that's way more important than whether the phone uses up a little more space in your pocket or not.
i just compared my iphone to a friends iphone 5 and despite the cam going on top of the speaker there is actually less "empty space" compared to the iphone 4. kinda interesting.

Why should one care? Because it's a portable device. Portable devices need to utilize their space very well to be any good. I mean; is there any reason why you wouldn't want a few extra cm/mm screen at the top/bottom of your phone while the phone stays the same size? I sure can't find any reason..
Take a look at the LG Nexus and iPhone 5. The LG phone is slightly better, but they're both pretty bad, having big areas of nothing below and above the screens.
There are good examples too though.
Most notably Samsung's Galaxy S3. It has a very large screen and doesn't have much wasted space. It's a great piece of hardware, albeit a little on the large side for a phone and I just can't live without a Nexus phone myself. (I am sick and tired of slow updates and all the **** that manufacturers and tele-companies throw in)
I want the phone to be one giant ****ing screen on the front. I don't want big areas that are pretty much useless.
THIS is pretty much what I want (I just did a little photo edit) :
A huge screen covering 90% of the front. Only making place for a speaker, camera and a light sensor above the screen.
Years ago we didn't have the technology for it, I'm pretty damn sure we do now.
MAKE IT HAPPEN PEOPLE! (heh)
