I, along with B-Wong, did notice this build. It's perfectly reasonable getting the Rod if you can reliably get it every game. With many people, however, this is not the case. Many are pressured into porting back or get that first blood and need to recall while not having 2000 gold yet. I say that if it's comfortable with your playstyle, go ahead and get it, but it'll be much more common for the regular player to get Sorcerer's Shoes and maybe an Amplifying Tome.
