I recently did a game with GP mid, wasn't that bad. You're not going to get a kill on most AP mids with GP, but you can farm extremely well, and with proper use of oranges, you're almost impossible to gank. Its pretty much like solo top, except you're liable to take a lot of burst damage mid, but a health potion or two can alleviate that.
