She can be a super carry end game, one of the hardest carries, but then, so can Kog and Cait etc.
At a competitive level, there's CandyPanda and I can't think of anyone else who plays her.
I think she just takes too long to really ramp up and get strong.
She's not bad though, but because she's not one of who I consider to be the best, I won't play her.

I've really noticed that strong ap ranged squishies like leblanc or ashe can pretty much completely shut trist down early game. This is devastating because she is so item dependent. If they can prevent you from getting your bf sword in a timely fashion tristana quickly becomes a liability for the team rather than an asset. I counter this with good communication and calling for ganks, but I think the main problem is that her abilities other than q and rocket jump just don't scale at all. If the range of ability also scaled with her level, even a little bit more, it would be a massive improvement to her.
Late game explosive shot active is complete weaksauce simply because I have to throw away tristana's best feature: her range. This is the problem with ap tristana too, her long cool downs and short range of abilities cripples the ap build. I can jump in and get some kills and jump out, but its so dependent on the cooldowns (which I feel are long), that a good player on the other team will just smash her face in as soon as she lands with the rocket jump. Her builds are pretty restrictive in this respect, building AD in a certain order seems really to be the best way to play her.
On the flip side, late game I really do think she is overpowered. Not against champions, but against fortifications. The other team literally cannot even leave their lane for even a couple of seconds or I will completely melt their turrets. This is just something I've been thinking about and was curious what the community thought. Also, GP completely smashes her face in too (screw parley, god I hate that ability lol).
Mainly I would like to see some early game boosts, possibly (?) late game nerf and a little variability with some scaling range on her abilities to allow for a more feasible ap build.
I'm not a pro, so feel free to correct me, this is just my personal experience
