Is the new Soul Fighter Event a sneaky hint for Project L?

The new and upcoming Summer Season event is going to mesh the best of anime “Tournament Arcs” with the influence of most of the popular Fighting Games. This did left people wondering and asking about the development of Project L, the actual fighting game from Riot.

We got the teaser with all the upcoming content for the Summer Season Event “Soul Fighter”, and it is a lot.

The new skins look amazing (Samira Ultimate is dope), the  "Arena" game mode coming to League of Legends feels like a real new game mode each combat round, and ultimately, the new champion Naafiri is already making strides in the PBE.

Along with all the cosmetics and events for League of Legends, these other titles are getting goodies: Legends of Runeterra (New Card skins), League of Legends: Wild Rift (Skins and a special in-game event), and Teamfight Tactics (New Chibi, Mini Legends and event).

Besides all of the changes and new additions, a community of players did also wonder if this event was tied to Project L, Riot's own Fighting Game.

Confusion on Sett Cinematic

There are certain snapshots from the Soul Fighter Event Teaser, when you can see a Sett throwing Lux into the ground. When you look closely though, it looks like a cinematic from popular fighting games.

When fans from Project L saw this, they got confused about if this was an announcement for something in the long-awaited fighting game.

But… this was quickly dismissed. Once a redditor pointed out that the cinematic was one of the usual animations from Legends of Runeterra, when a character levels up.

What happened to Project L?

Apart from interviews given by the Cannon brothers in EVO Japan, and the recent addition of Fighting Game players to the Project L team (Among the best in the business), there’s not much information on their actual progress.

Last update from December 2022

Currently, Project L team even mentioned that there are not going to be any updates until the end of this year. But, this can be a bluff though considering EVO 2023 is very close.

The premier tournament of Fighting Games, EVO 2023 is going to be celebrated on August 4th, and while the tournament is being held on, we can expect a Project L announcement.

Project L has gotten announcements close to EVO before, or throughout the tournament.

With this in mind, there is a big chance that we will get an update. And considering the event theme of Fighters and the proximity of EVO.

At least we can get a sneaky teaser…

Which team are behind Project L?

The Cannon Brothers (Tom and Tonny Cannon) are leading the team. Previously known for creating the EVO Series of Tournaments we just mentioned.

The Cannon brothers also took part in the FGC community in different ways.

  • As advisors for development of fighting games.
  • The created GGPO, the rollback netcode that changed the entire industry.

And their last venture is Project L.

GGPO revolutionized the entire FGC. And it is free-to-access

If we know something about the hand of these fighting gods twins, is their midas touch in everything related to the fighting game community.

Whether this event finds success or not? (It probably does), a Reddit post saw a lot of League of Legends players worried about the lack of content updates in Season 13.

But, with all the content coming soon, we're in for a treat this next month in July 19th.

A few days before the Season ends, the upcoming patch this Wednesday is the last one before it wraps up. You can check our guides to pick a few things up from the very best OTP's and players across all of the servers.
