Two Magic n' Mayhem Team Comps to Win With in Patch 14.16

Still trying to get the hang of the latest TFT patch? Try out one of these two trending team comp ideas in your next match!

BASTION 4 SCHOLAR 4 - Ahri/Poppy Carry

One of the best performing compositions in TFT right now involves some of the cheapest units. Try out this Bastion/Scholar composition in your next game and see what an Ahri carry can do in Magic n' Mayhem.

Early Game Comp

Luckily, you can get your hands on several different Bastions right from the bat. Lillia and Poppy both will be core units for the entirety of the game, so make sure to buy as many as possible in the early game. Ideally, Poppy will be your secondary carry alongside Ahri, so getting her to a three-star level would do wonders for your team.

Once you've got Lillia, Poppy, and Ahri, you'll have a few different options for the early game. Most ideally, you'll be able to find Hecarim, then add a fourth, temporary, Bastion for a big front line power spike, or add in Zoe, who will activate both Scholar 2 and Witchcraft 2.

Lillia, Poppy, Ahri, and Zoe are all your core units, as well as Hecarim. Aside from the latter, all of these units are quite low cost. You’ll need to reroll at 5 and/or 6 to make sure your units can keep up with the rest of the lobby. This means that once you’ve hit 5 or 6, roll your gold down to 30 each round and try to purchase as many of these low cost units as you can. Prioritise starring Ahri and Poppy, but if they are contested, or you simply see many more Lillias and Zoes, grab those instead!

Item Priority

Ahri's a fairly versatile mage, so any of the following items will do nicely: Rabadon's Deathcap, Jeweled Gauntlet, Adaptive Helm, Blue Buff, or Nashor's Tooth. Poppy will want a typical array of tank items like Warmog's Armor, Gargoyle Stoneplate, Steadfast Heart and even Bloodthirster. Both Poppy and Lillia, or either of them, could use an Ionic Spark to increase Ahri's DPS by applying Shred with their attacks, which lowers the enemies’ Magic Resist.

In simpler terms, try to get 3x Needlessly Large Rods, 1x Sparring Gloves, 1x Negatron Cloak, and 1x Tear of the Goddess to get a great setup for Ahri.

Top Augments

  • Spellblades - This Augment is perfect for such a heavy mage composition. Everytime one of your units casts an Ability, their next attack deals bonus magic damage based on their Ability Power.

  • Higher Education - This is a trait-specific Augment that empowers your Scholars. Whenever your Scholars spend 80 mana, they'll gain 12% Attack Speed. As an added bonus, this Augment gives you an Ahri unit for free, which will make three-starring ever so slightly easier.

  • Witchy Wallop - This Augment is great for your Poppy, though not necessarily do-or-die for this composition. The augment hampers your Poppy's tanking ability slightly, but causes her to deal more damage overall. It also gives you a free two-star Poppy, getting you a third of the way to three-star in one button.

  • Magic Wand - Gain a free Needlessly Large Rod and grant 18 Ability power to all of your units - great for such a magic-oriented team comp.

  • Arcana Crest - Once again this is a great Augment though not crucial. If you do acquire it, you’ll be able to play Arcana 3, and possibly 4 or even Arcana 5 later if you’d like. If you do get it, give it to one of your Bastions, preferably Taric later on.

Late Game Comp

We've got all our core units set, but we're stuck at Bastion 3. To get to Bastion 4, your best bet is Taric. Not only is he a fairly strong unit in his own right (being a 4-cost unit) but this will enable you to dip into Portal 3 once you've gotten Ryze as well.

Speaking of, we're going to focus the rest of our attention on the backline. Ryze, as mentioned, should be fielded, to attain Portal 3 and Scholar 3. Finally, we add the next strongest Scholar into the comp - Milio - who happens to also be a Faerie like Lillia, which will also activate Faerie 2 for you.

With that, you've got your 8 unit composition all done, and everything is incredibly neat trait-wise. You've got at least two silver-tiered traits active (Bastion, Scholar, and possibly Arcana), as well as a bit of Portal, Faerie, and Witchcraft. If you do go to 9+, you may want to add Tahm Kench and Xerath and achieve Arcana 5. Otherwise, the comp is pretty much perfect as is.

WARRIOR 4 MULTISTRIKER 3 - Katarina/Nilah Carry

This composition is more front-line heavy and it's dual-carried by two Warrior units - Nilah and Katarina. This comp, once again, uses lower-cost units as its carries, requiring some deftly handled rerolling at Level 6.

Early Game Comp

Since half of this comp relies on units costing at least 4 gold, your early game will be probably quite haphazard and tentative. You'll want to buy as many Katarinas and Nilahs as you can, and you will also want to get an Akali for later on.

In the meantime, a good early game comp can be Katarina and Nilah, plus Lillia for the Faerie Crown for Katarina, and then Ashe and Elise, to activate Eldritch 3. This will give you some more tanking power in the early game.

Alternatively, you can forgo Elise and Ashe and instead try to activate Pyro 2 by adding a Shen and Akali to your board. You'll definitely want Akali for the rest of the game, but you'd need to be a bit lucky to get both Katarina and Shen early on. A benefit to this approach is that you'll be able to start collecting cinders early on in the game. Every fourth cinder you collect will increase your team's overall Attack Speed by 1%, so the earlier you start collecting, the better.

As before, your carries are two and three-cost units, so you’ll need to reroll during the early game to ensure you can star them up so they can compete in the late game. Prioritise starring Katarina up to 3 by rerolling at level 6. You can star up Nilah or Akali, as both are fairly similar units in terms of role and damage. Look at what others in the lobby are playing - if there is someone running an Eldritch comp and buying up all the Nilahs, you may want to pivot to a Katarina+Akali carry composition instead, for example.

Item Priority

You'll want to prioritise itemising Katarina and Nilah, though Akali can be a competent carry as well. Akali and Nilah are both Attack Reapers and build the same items - Infinity Edge, Bloodthirster, Titan's Resolve, Edge of Knight, Sterak's Gage - all of these items will suit them well. Katarina, on the other hand, is a Magic Reaper. As she will be wearing the Faerie Crown, you only need two more items for her. Some good options are Hand of Justice, Jeweled Gauntlet, Bloodthirster, Rabadon's Deathcap, Crownguard, and more. Basically, things that will improve her damage, but also give her a chance at surviving in the front line.

To simplify things, 2x Sparring Gloves, 1x Needlessly Large Rod, and 1x Tear of the Goddess to itemise Katarina. Grab 2x B.F. Sword, 1x Negatron Cloak, 1x Recurve Bow, 1x Chain Vest, 1x Sparring Gloves to itemise Akali or Nilah.

Top Augments

  • Unleash The Beast - This Augment will give you a Sterak’s Gage and make the item more potent throughout the game for your board only, by granting its wearer Attack Speed and temporary CC immunity. Sterak’s is a good item for Nilah, Akali, and can even work well on Katarina, so this is a great option.

  • Not Today - Similarly, Edge of Night is a great Reaper item and would be used well by your three reapers. This upgrade makes holders of an Edge of Night gain 35% Attack Speed permanently.

  • You Have My Sword - Since at least two of your carry units are Attack Damage-based, this Augment will significantly improve the damage of several of your units.

  • Keepers II - While this team is nearly all front line, Reapers are notoriously quite squishy. Keepers II may give them the extra protective padding they need to pop off later on in the round.

  • Warrior/Arcana Crest - These Crests are not crucial but can open up some versatility in your composition.

Late Game Comp

If you went with a Shen and Lillia opener, it's time to replace those units now for stronger Pyros and stronger Faeries. Varus and Kalista are the best choices, as they will not only fill the Pyro 2 but also because both units are strong 4-costs themselves, and will make for a potent back line.

As for the front, you'll first want to add Hecarim. This will activate Multistriker 3, giving a big power spike to Akali, but also to your Varus. Hecarim is also a proper front liner, unlike your reapers. Joining him at the vanguard, you'll likely want to field a Fiora. This will activate Warrior 4, at last, giving more Omnivamp and Damage Amp to your carries.

You can now either bulk up your front line a little bit more or try to add some more damage in the back line. Either way, you'll be slotting in an Arcana unit, it's just a matter of which one. Tahm Kench is a good tank, while Xerath is a powerful 5-cost unit that will enable you to purchase powerful Charms. If you feel like you're not lacking in the tank department too much, Xerath is usually the best choice.
