In a new /dev article, Riot went into detail talking about the new three-Season structure for League of Legends, major Battle Pass changes, and an overhaul of various Rewards systems.
2025 Season Structure
Riot released heaps of announcements at the start of the week regarding the upcoming League of Legends 2025 Season, and things are shaking up big time for the first time in a long while!
Up until now, a year in League of Legends consisted of three ranked Splits. At the end of each split, your ranked rating would reset and you'd be introduced to some larger item, rune, and champion changes. From here on out, a year will now be separated into three themed Seasons, which will have a great effect on the gameplay and even appearance of Summoner’s Rift. The idea is also to immerse players into the world of Runeterra, in and out of the game.
Each Season will focus on one region in Runeterra, or perhaps one of the many established, alternate universes like Dark Star or High Noon. During the course of the Season, everything from the gameplay, to the featured game modes, to skins and champions which will have a strong connection to the Season’s theme, will be in line with the overarching theme of the Season. Each Season will also comprise two Acts.
Some content will fall outside the theme, such as events like the Lunar Revel or April Fools, but the vast majority of content will be tied to the Seasonal theme.
The first Season in 2025 will be in the theme of Noxus. Those who have been following leaks and listening to rumours already know that we can expect at least one Noxian champion release early in 2025 - Mel Medarda from Arcane. Aside from that, we know that the Summoner’s Rift will be getting a small makeover in the style of the warmongering kingdom, as well as several new mechanics like respawning Nexus Turrets and a new neutral monster.
Riot has said that skins will also revolve around the Theme of the Season, so you can expect that either Noxian champions will be getting new skins or that a new Noxus-themed skinline, like Chosen of the Wolf, is on the horizon.
Battle Passes & Rewards
Riot is also looking to improve their current Battle Pass system. Like in TFT, Riot plans to release a free and paid Pass, and each Pass will now last four patch cycles (about eight weeks). This is double the current duration of Event Passes, giving players more time to get the rewards that they want, while not having to play any more games than they do now. As expected, the new Passes will have strong ties to the Season’s theme, so our first new Pass will be Noxus themed!
Everyone will have access to the free pass, which grants various rewards, culminating in a free Seasonal skin. The Pass will have 50 levels to complete, and is coming to the client starting next year.
Objectives & Battle Pass Experience (BXP)
The current, tiny missions tab will be replaced by a spacious Objectives Tab. You can gain Battle Pass Experience (BXP) just by playing, or by completing these new Objectives for bonus experience. League will now have Daily, Weekly, and Act-long missions. Objectives grant more than just BXP - the rewards will be clearly visible in the tab.
Pass Rewards
As mentioned before, the Battle Pass will come in a free and paid variety. Every free Pass will have one unique Seasonal skin and every paid pass will have three additional Seasonal Skins and a Seasonal Prestige Skin (5 unique skins in total).
The Paid Pass can be purchased for 1650 RP (the same as the current price for Event Passes) or in bundles for 2650 RP or 3650 RP. In case of the former, players will gain 10 Pass levels immediately, a Prestige Emote, and a champion. In the latter case, the players will gain all of these as well as 25 Mythic Essence and a Prestige Chroma.
In addition to these, there will be other rewards such as Emotes, Skin Shards, Icons, Chests and more. A full overview of the free Pass can be seen below:
Prestige Skin Changes
Speaking of Prestige skins, it’s worth noting one new change Riot is making moving forward. Prestige skins have historically been a more luxurious variety of an existing skin in a theme. Starting next year, there will no longer be a non-prestige version of a Prestige skin. This will make the skins feel a lot more unique and a lot more “prestigious”, hopefully leading to higher quality prestige skins overall.
Other Rewards Systems
Riot has repeatedly mentioned that they have been overcomplicating certain systems, leading to an overwhelming amount of currencies in the game and confusion. To fix that, some other systems that are getting updated are the Honor System and the Honor Shop, the Hextech/Masterwork Chest system, Champion Masteries, and Event/Showcase/Mythic Variant Capsules.
Honor / Honor Shop Update
Riot has already started with their Honor improvements but they have not finished. Starting next year, your Honor level will be directly tied to how you are rewarded in League. A positive Honor level will increase your Pass experience and give you access to social capabilities, which includes access to All Chat, post-game chat, and which will affect your ability to ping and emote.
Because Honor will now be tied to the Battle Pass system, Honor tokens and the Honor shop will be removed. In the first patch of the year, all Honor skins will be added to the Honor Shop, in case you have any leftover Tokens. After that, all Honor Tokens will be converted to 1050 Orange Essence per Token. At the end of the season, Three Honors Shen will be automatically granted to all Honor level 5 players early next year.
Hextech & Masterwork Chest System
With the addition of the Sanctum and the new battle pass, Masterwork Chests have been made redundant and will no longer be on sale. Masterwork Chests will be rolled out in two phases:
Phase 1: Chests will no longer be sold starting from the 6th of January 2025. They will not be granted as rewards in systems such as Battle Passes or Ranked Rewards.
Phase 2: The Masterwork Milestone track will be deactivated on the 5th of March 2025. All earned rewards will be auto-claimed. If you have any unopened Masterwork Chests, you'll want to open them before this date.
Hextech Chests, on the other hand, will remain in the game. They will be the lowest cost way to obtain skin shards.
Champion Mastery Rewards
Champion Mastery will also be incorporated into the Battle Pass to avoid having a second separate reward track for players to think about. Instead of receiving chests, you'll now receive Pass Experience as you complete Mastery milestones.
Capsules
Finally, the Capsule system will be all but retired. By Riot's own admission, it was convoluted and confusing, and at certain points they had three capsules up at the same time. Mythic Variants will be moved to the Sanctum as tiered rewards, whereas Capsules are totally going away. Mythic Variants will have their own bad luck protection that carries over to future Mythic Variants, guaranteed at 40 attempts.
