Who is currently the tankiest/most op tank in every espect, team fight, most survivability, etc:? I've been thinking and leaning towards Garen, Rammus, Jarvan, Sion, Malphite? But I honestly have no clue. pls explain, lol
1) The healing type. Those tanks don't have as much crowd control or natural defensive stats then others. They are able to swallow tons of damage through the healing effects they possess. Dr. Mundo, Volibear, Zac, Garen, Maokai, Aatrox are good examples of it. This particular category will tend to stack alot of health (to resist burst) and take items and masteries that increase their regeneration. The most common combo in season 4 was Second Wind + Spirit Visage.
Some other champions can be built to resist to alot of damage with healing effects (they can be played as Tank but are more viable at other roles in the current meta): Karma through Renewal, Xin Zhao with the healing on his w or simply Vladimir ...
2) Made of bricks type. Those tanks don't tend to build around healings and health, they simply stack alot of flat defenses. Most of the time, they possess a bonus of defense in their kit or a passive that gives them offense in function of the amount of defense they have. Shyvana, Taric, Rammus, Galio, Malphite, Wukong ...
3) High crowd control type. Unlike the others they don't excel at sustaining theirself or at being incredibly solid. They stack a reasonable amount of defenses to survive, but excel at restraining enemies movement. They are usually pick to counter hypercarries or assasins. Sejuani, Nautilus, Amumu ...
4) Hard engage type or hard disengage type. These tanks are usually picked for their abilities to quickly engage/disengage (very popular in the lcs). Jarvan IV, Gragas ...
The rest could be placed in many categories or simply correspond at other roles even if they essentially build defenses: Nasus, Renekton, Darius, Singed ...
Even though they all have different specialities that help them to perform, their role remain the same: protection. None is truly better then the others, they are all viable. They all comport advantages and disadvantages that you will discover with time.
There are too much variables in the game to conclude that one particular champion is the '' best tank ''. It's a matter of preferences and playstyle. But if you simply want to know which champion can swallow the greatest amount of damage: it depends of the number of damage and the time on which it is taken. (Kayle could swallow billions of damage with her ult if it only last 1 second but Mundo would be better if it last 5 mins since he can heal himself)...
Can't forget the infamous Heimerdinger tank and his regen of the gods if left to his bidding. I would also add Gragas to the healing category because of his passive. I also have no idea where to throw Braum in this since he has a lot of cc, but he also is a "brick at times" same with Leona.
Howerver, if you are wondering who's currently the best overall tank, that would be Maokai.
Glory of Maokai
There's a very good reason why he's constantly picked in top lane.
He has good sustain from his passive Sap Magic, solid pushing power with Arcane Smash+ Sapling Toss, super easy gank set up (teamfight initiation, peeling, easy picking) in Twisted Advance and great teamfight utility from Vengeful Maelstrom. And these are just the obvious things that make him great.
P.s. I can go more in-depth/provide numbers for my choices, if you'd like.
If by "tankiest" you mean. Take the most damage and not die then Sion bare in mind though that Sion can have literally infinite health if you had a game where he had infinite farm.
Cho'Gath gets a lot of health for free with ult so it's not hard to have a pretty damn tanky Cho'Gath.
In general though. most damage taken =/= best tank
I think it depends on what kind of tank you're going for. Health regen tank, armor tank, CC tank, or just a flat out kind of bruiser tank like Alistar.
I believe that with regards to teamfight presence aspect, the final is between Hecarim, Malphite and of course Alistar. In terms of raw survivability the title goes to Dr. Mundo.
Overall, I think the title goes to Maokai right now.
alistar is to time best tank overall today hes ult makes him even more tanky hes Q can airknock enemies in Teamfights he can heal every champion and knock back mele range assasins out of teamfight or knock adc in your Team.
in the sense of overall tankiness of combines health, armor, and armor/MR I would say Garen, Nasus, Mundo, Volibear, Galio, Malphite are all very strong. It all depends on the circumstances though. For example against a team with high %health damage Malphite, Taric, and Galio or Rammus would be ideal choices due to them having high resistances but not always as high of health. Then again, against a team with high armor/MR penetration but low %health Mundo, Nasus, Garen, Alistar, or Volibear would be strong choices.
It all depends on what your trying to do and if you want to go for pure tank or some damage.
If you search for flat out tankiness stat Rammus wins it easily i think, but as said there are tons of different tanks and some do better than other in given situations
