To the OP: I honestly believe a person needs to know at least the main played champs in ranked, how they work and have a good idea of their kits, including cooldown, buildpaths, strengths and weaknesses. The next patch will be bringing some nerfs to a few of these champions, but right now some of the most played are (if I'm not mistaken and probably forgetting a few):
- Top:
- Mid:
- Jungle:
- Marksman:
- Support:
It doesn't matter if you like a role or not, to become half-decent you gotta know how to play these champs (in theory), how to play with them in team and against them. As Kane said, you should also have a roster of 2-3 champs for each role, and try to narrow them down as you go up the elo ladder. On a sidenote, as a jungler you also gotta know all timers (spawn and respawn) have an idea of what your enemy jungler does and know how to use the places he goes as an advantage to where you are (counterjungling, getting objectives, ganking, counterganking)
All of the junglers I mentioned can be built relatively tanky or with a lot of damage (except kha'zix, he can't really go too tanky). If you want to carry in bronze/silver/gold, you'll want at least some damage on your jungler or you become too reliant on your team.
kalaaver provides a comment in this thread that gives you a fairly good list of the most commonly used champs in higher elo...check it out.

* Pick about 2-3 champs for each role, and learn how to play them well, learn the basic tactics and how to carry the game by yourself.
* Watch pros playing champions you would like to play in ranked, on youtube or twitch. If you watch them and learn, you can improve a lot.
* Also check tons of guides heer on MobaFire, try them out, but don't follow them blindly. What works for them, may not as well work for you. Modify them to your likeing.
* Don't play ranked if you are hungry, tired, sleepy, annoyed, or have something else on your mind. ALways pick the time, when you are feeling good.
* And don't play ranked as your first game of the day - try one or two drafts before that, so you can get "into the mood".
* Last but not least - if you fall to B5 again - well, and what? You can't get any worse than that, there's only way up ;)
