As a jungler trundle has always existed in that zone where they're not bad, but they aren't very good. Trundle was always fun, and was a good counter jungler, but most people played him top.
Why was trundle good top? well, Trundle had amazing sustain with his passive, which has been kept the same, now kings tribute, every time a minion dies around trundle, he gains a percentage of their max HP back. Trundle was also extremely strong in a duel do to his stat sapping nature.
Jungling
Jungling as trundle wasn't very effective because it was his ult that gave him that really strong 1v1 potential, and certain junglers could just make his day hell, out gank him, and take his stuff. It was a general pain to say the least.
Trundles ganks weren't necessarily 'weak' so much as situational, his Pillar was really good at cutting people off, or bumping people into others, but at the time it was his only slow, and the enemy had to be slightly pushed or trundle had to get it in a really good spot to work. It's range wasn't very long though, so he usually had to come in from tri brush or a lane gank to make it work, if the enemy had warded decently.
Trundles ability to dive wasn't actually that bad, if the creep wave was pushed and he had got some armor or HP, it usually was possible to dive a low health target, though the risk was greater than say, someone like nasus, or Jarvans, risk.
Skills
Trundle had a skill called Contamination zone, which increased his attack speed and movement speed (as well as other stats) so long as he stood on it. This skill made him an excellent dueler, and provided a gank happened, really good at finishing off a gank. It now increases his healing effects from his ultimate and his passive, which makes it even stronger, provided you're using it for sustain, or you use it before you ultimate.
Trundles Q, used to be a simple auto attack reset that sapped a few stats and that was it. It's been buffed now, as it now has a short slow on every use of it, and I think it might even sap more, I'm not sure on that one. This actually synergizes REALLY well with Iceborn gauntlet (I've built it a few games now, really like it) and is a really helpful tool to chase people down, before Trundle basically had to build frozen mallet if he wasn't able to be in contamination zone, now he can just run with his Q for a short slow.
His R has changed most of all to me, though I'm not sure of his original R, I've found that the heal/sap Is much more recognizable, and I feel like I can do more with my R than usual.
Pillar of Filth, now Pillar of Ice, was a slowing field with an object in the middle that would push enemies back (canceling channeled ultimates) and then slow enemies in the field around. Well placed, this could cut off escapes, slow enemies long enough to keep them in the fight, cancel ultimates, and be a general nuisance to the enemy team. At max rank this skills cooldown wasn't that long and was usable in a number of situations. This skill, being a staple of trundles kit, remains largely unchanged.
Onto his Item choices.
I've always been a fan of iceborn Gauntlet, which is why I was so pleased to see it synergize well with his Q in the first place. I mean, it always technically 'did,' after all, his Q is an auto attack reset that procs the effect. Now however, you can proc two slows on it, and the slowing field is quite helpful. I'm sure Iceborn was always kinda a pick you COULD take, but now I think it's just more viable. See for yourself if you think so.
Spirits visage is an interesting item. It grants a good chunk of HP with magic resist tacked on. I know a lot of junglers build Runic now, but if your support is working on Runic, Spirits visage can be excellent on trundle because of how it synergizes with his passive and R. This can make trundle a true terror to kill if there's a minion wave around.
Trundle can still build most of his old items to, Frozen mallet works fine, and tanky stats are always pretty welcome on him.
Verdict
I feel like trundles new moves give him a lot more power in a gank, as well as overall in the jungle and in the team. His ability to duel is still very much there, and his kit remains extremely fluid and similar. Trundle feels just like trundle, with a new outlook on trolling. I wouldn't go as far to say he's tier 1, maybe not even tier 2, I'm not the person to test that, but I have to say I think he'll make a viable pick as time progresses.
See you next time everyone, Until then, Keep trollin.
Disclaimer: I'm not a pro, I'm not diamond, I'm not plat, I just really love trundle.
