"The proper start would be doran's shield into a negatron cloak if you're even or behind (going damage if ahead). D-Shield will work to mitigate mixed damage and then an early negatron cloak will mitigate their penetration runes and then some."

doran's shield is still a pretty decent starting item and a lot of laners can benefit from it.
Useful against irelia who deals a lot of true damage to you (so armour isn't as useful) or...

rejuvenation bead is a poor start and doesn't give any early combat stats. long sword is not a survivability item either and also a poor starting item regardless.
