"I've never heard of graphics cards not being compatible with certain motherboards; your motherboard has a PCI-E slot in order to run a 6970 so you can just slot the new card in there.
I'd pick the 970, but (at least in my country) is significantly more expensive. "

"I'd upgrade if it is a 6950/6970. For 1080p, I'd recommend the MSI GTX 970 or AMD 380 depending on your budget.
I used to rock the i5 2500k with a Sapphire 6950, upgraded it to a R9 290 about a year ago and the difference was very significant. "
