As Leona, I would not go Philosopher's Stone first. This is because Leona does not consume huge mana, and she is about all-in. So, more so than sustain, I would go items like Sightstone.

I would love to hear more explanation of your item choices. Like, Ashe rushes IE first because of her passive, Focus.
Also, would like to add that Ashe has no strong AD Steroids (Focus is strong at Lvl 1 though)

"I did test Ruby Crystal start on Sona before, so I will comment how I felt.
It was not really good. Sona having no mana sustain really hurt the laning phase. I couldn't harass the opponent fully enough.
I would rather prefer sustain start at first.
