About This Team Comp
I've loved the idea beyond Star Guardian and rapid spell casting, and after a small amount of trial and error come to you today with a flexible guide on how to perfect your Star Guardian comp. This build goes heavy on the idea of lockdown Crowd Control and heavy damage. You will find explanations later explaining the synergy between these units and why I think they make good pairs.
I understand TFT never gives you exactly what you want when you want it, so as I've done before, I've created multiple build options to suit your varying needs mid-game. You may not always find that Soraka (or even Vel'koz) until you're hitting riveting gameplay moments. I get that, so you'll find multiple options for what to make depending on your current needs in this guide. I have listed items you are searching for under the #1 options in Early and Mid game. Please check them out!
There will be 2 build paths I'll be talking about today. I will say: THIS COMP IS EXTREMELY ITEM DEPENDENT! IF YOU ARE NOT SEEING AT LEAST SOME OF THE STUFF YOU NEED, YOU WILL LIKELY HAVE A BAD TIME!! please take that into consideration and fish for items accordingly from carousels. Without further delay, read away and feel free to discuss in the comments :) I'm always looking forward to hearing feedback and hearing how it works out for others. Please feel free as well to give my guide a vote if you found it enjoyable! good luck out there summoners!
EDIT: (10.8) With the recent changes, Protector is still viable as an option, however it is also worth considering maxing out on Sorcerers instead if you roll a star guardian charm. Try and grab a Xerath if you can and replace your Vel'koz otherwise for higher damage output and stuns. Items remain relatively the same. For Xerath you can rush a Rabadon's when possible and a Quicksilver to keep him happy and healthy :)
Early build & items to look for
Early on, you will want to be hunting for your 1/2 cost units. Zoe, Ahri, and Poppy are the more likely ones you'll be finding but don't neglect Syndra or Neeko should they appear. Neeko is very strong on her own and Syndra is your late game carry. Finding her early and getting items on her is very beneficial to keeping health high early on if you get lucky on item rolls. Additional units you can pick up now are Rakan and Lux. You can swap out Poppy for Rakan to have 3 SG, 2 Sorc, and 2 Protector for a little extra front line beef if you can 2 star them early on. ITEMS TO LOOK FOR:Tear of the Goddess*** (Please get all of these you can, they make 5 completed items we'd like)Negatron Cloak (For Chalice)Needlessly Large Rod (Gauntlet and Morrelo)Gloves (Thief's gloves on Neeko and Gauntlet material)Spatula* (For Star Guardian's Charm and gives wiggle room to the build. Very useful level 5+)
mid game build #1 (6 Star guardian/basic)Â
Around mid-game you should have picked up at least 4-5 of your Star Guardians. You want to rush to 6 as quickly as possible for that FAT mana sharing. Neeko and Poppy hold up the front line very and hopefully you have 1-2 items on your Syndra to stack more mana abilities. You can either toss damage items onto your Syndra/Ahri or save them for your extra guardian later on if you feel lucky enough to get a spatula. The best candidates for this charm are either Lux or Vel'koz as one is a massive CC and the other is extremely high, spammable damage once you hit 6 SG. "Mr. Wraith!! Why Thief's Gloves on Neeko??" I'm glad you asked Anon. Thief's Gloves not only make your frontline Neeko that much slippier to hit, but the RNG from the items usually leads to extra mana and/or health. Both of these help keep her alive and kicking to give your backline space to shoot spells off like no one's business. Of course, this is personal taste and I will not say that it is the statistically best move to make, but I can say from personal experience I have not regretted the decision to make it if I'm randomly getting components for it. Seeing a Morello and a Trap Claw pop up on her late game reminds you why you do it. Have some fun with it eh?I included 4 Star Guardians so you can drop 1 of them to include a different sorcerer if necessary. Say you can't find your Neeko, Syndra, or Lux; toss in an Annie. It will suffice for now, but please replace it when you can.ITEMS TO MAKE:Chalice (1-2)Seraph's Embrace (1-2)Star Guardian's Charm (1)Options:Rabadon's DeathcapMorrelonomiconJeweled GauntletSpear of Shojin
mid game build #2 (ft. rakan)
This composition assumes you have not found a Spatula and are lacking your 6th Star Guardian (Soraka hasn't left the sleepover just yet). This substitutes the immediate satisfaction of 6 SG for a more CC heavy focus. Rakan gives himself and Neeko Protector, which guarantees they stay alive a little longer, keeping your frontline happy and semi-healthy along with a chainable several second stun to keep things moving. This is not even including Zoe's or Lux's stun getting added to the mix, so you should be outdamaging the enemy as they will have several units locked up for quite some time. The CC is what holds this early comp together so if you're not locking things up, you're probably dying. reposition accordingly and keep your Syndra safe from the carnage. Most importantly, this version helps negate front line beefy comps from the picture for a while. Neeko is strong enough on her own to stay alive to pop her ability over 95% of the time, which gives her a shield and usually starts the SG ability spam. Syndra starts popping off for high damage, and you're usually very comfortable unless you run into an Infiltrator team. Running into these mid-game is maddening as you can't afford to move anyone right now as usually no one has dropped yet, so you can't move anyone around to deal with them. Exercise caution. The biggest thing is this version is less item dependent early on than the other 2 build choices. Obviously you will want 1-2 strong items on Syndra as early as possible, but you can still cheese wins with the massive amounts of CC this composition provides. Keep an eye out for item components so we can max out on Star Guardians and get in our win condition.
mid game build #3 (highest damage/less cc)
Needless to say, this composition trades CC for LUDICROUS damage. Vel'koz is an absolute monster when given the star guardian trait and some items to carry him (Gauntlet/Death Cap) so you can position Neeko as your front line and have the small amount of CC from her and Zoe keep your team up and running for a small period of time while Vel'koz melts their entire team. This in turn triggers more spells from the rest of your surviving units and.. yeah things just die. 1 way or the other.. Do take caution you lose CC with this composition, so if you prefer the earlier CC before the damage I recommend the Rakan build for now as it's also less early item dependent. Eventually we will be moving to some of these units later, but not for now.
end game build #1 (Basic)
Average End Game Build, giving 6 SG, 2 Protector, and 4 Sorcerer. This build is EXTREMELY heavy on CC, which you'll find delightful as you spellsling until the map is covered in bright colors and dead units (hopefully not yours). Longer fights are your friend, as the spell casting builds to ridiculous levels very quickly which is help maintained through 3 massive AOE stuns (Rakan, Neeko, Lux) and a targeted stun (Zoe). Healing from Soraka keeps these 3 frontline units alive while Syndra starts stacking damage the longer the game goes. You will find it very hard to lose games at this point as almost no other composition provides consistently high (and stacking) damage while also providing early CC (Neeko should spellcast around 2 seconds in if things go right). The instant a SG pops a spell, all hell breaks loose. SYNDRA IS YOUR KEY COMPONENT!! DO NOT LET HER DIE IF YOU CAN HELP IT!! Keep her centered and close to your other units, and if you're forced to split her off to avoid heavy CC/Damage (Cho'gath/ Gangplank/ Miss Fortune) do so in a way where she can still provide mana to your team. Let Neeko, Rakan, and Poppy face the brunt of the damage and lock up their front line as the rest of your team melts their tanks and CC's their backline. Let it be known this composition will fall apart if you do not have at least 1-2 mana items on your Syndra. Ahri is another possibility but Syndra is just the easier choice with stacking damage overtime and a decently low mana cost that isn't a front-liner. Keep her alive like your life depends on it (because it does).Outside of Chalice and Seraph's, most other items are flexible. Work with what you have and put them where you think they work best. Tanky items are best put onto Neeko or Poppy.
end game build #2 (vel'koz carry w/ SG charm)
If you were lucky enough to get your hands on a Guardian Charm, you have 2 options on how to take this composition to the next level. You can either go on extreme CC by placing it on the Lux, or for ludicrous damage by placing it on the Vel'koz. You hold extremely high CC as it stands with just these units, and still hold 4 sorcerer which is strong on it's own even at only level 7 (dropping the Lux or Vel'koz depending on taste or availability). This composition becomes weak to infiltrators as Vel'koz will normally end up picking the thing you don't want to hit if he survives long enough to get his laser off. Lux can also spam her stun once the star guardians start spamming, and she will happily contribute to more Neeko slam dunks to keep the frontline from doing absolutely anything on their end. As a 9th unit if you get that far, toss in Annie for the CC and shield. This finishes you with max star guardian and sorcerer with a 2 protector for your Rakan and Neeko.Â
