Main character was also a sociopath.
I consider that a plus :D
Seriously though, characters are done masterfully in that series (at least in the manga). There's genuine character development.
But if that doesn't float your boat just try one of the other suggestions.

If you have plans to watch Fate/Stay Night, I recommend you to watch the Unlimited Blade Works one than the original. But you should watch the original one so you could have some knowledge about the Fate series (if you only plan to watch the anime series).
Thanks OwenTheAwesomer for the sig!
I know I never managed to get through Claymore, but that also means I can't definitely tell you it's bad I guess.
Log Horizon seems like a decent suggestion to me. The second season isn't that great in my opinion but S1 is worth checking out I think.
Looking through some of the recommended series for FMA on MAL, I think Darker than Black and Psycho-Pass are good suggestions.
What about something like Death Parade? Do you like mystery?

********'s a pretty good fertilizer
The first season of Psycho-Pass is good, the second season... pretty meh. Log Horizon is good. And Death Parade is the bomb. I mean, just look at the opening theme.

I've seen a few animes though and liked them mostly; Fate/Stay Night, though I HATED the main character. Elfen Lied was good, if confusing, and I partially liked dothack, but hated the similarly themed Sword Art.
