@ Jovy it's great, thanks!
And now, with my new super powers, I'll try to find the BBcode of your red! :P

edit: mission complete! Buuuut it's probably too dark with this background: it's almost invisible. Maybe this is a good compromise.

Oh, and if you have a couple of minutes:

(but now I am planning to switch from simple red to your dark red, it looks way better)

Sure no problem!
  • Deeefinitely want to use a darker red because blood red can be painful to look at in larger amounts.
  • This might be a weird rule, but I try to keep text smaller than the face of the character in the picture, to help with proportions. Right now the text is too big IMO.
  • You also want to keep the text near the focal point (IE the character). If you want it to go above the lower border, don't have it be as long as the whole border (usually), but in the centre with some space on each side.
  • The good thing about photoscape is that you can stylize the text a little bit unlike in paint. I'd add a shadow to your text to make it pop, but don't make it too prominent. Something like this https://i.imgur.com/fB1TYxn.png
  • I like to keep borders for opening banners around 10 pixels max. For signatures, half that or 3-4 pixels even.
  • I'm guessing you used the Colorize filter to make the splash art red, and that's what made it a little JPEGy? https://i.imgur.com/5AjiB9f.png Either that or you used a low quality picture? Either way I'd remove the colorize filter and keep only the border and text red.

Also this is the exact code from the border #4c0408 though any darker red will look more or less the same so you don't need to fuss about it. Mind you it might not look good in a guide since it's pretty dark. This is a softer version from the background of the signature #9a5255

@ Jovy Ok, I've tried again (and I think this is my last attempt for today, I have to return to my work ç_ç).
This is done using some of your tips. Honestly I think that borders are too small, almost invisibles, probably due to the fact that my image is too high. And my original image was a jpg, I believe that's not a smart move. Should I use a png?
My shadow set up is a little bit different (maybe that's due to the fact that I'm using a mac version), so I hope it's not too prominent ^^

Anyway, without any filter for red (I used one, I can't remember which one), do you think there is still enough red in the image? To me, as now, it looks "greeny".
About the font, I am not totally sure about this one, but I want a font clear enough to leave text easy to read.

It's definitely a bit too tall, the dimensions you want are 800 (width) x 300 (height) and yours are 1215-737. Once you crop it the border should look nicer.

I do think that only the accents being red can look nice, though you can lose some of the power of the green with a few steps... Auto-level, remove colour cast (green), add a film effect. I'd also use the Region (Out of Focus) filter to make everything but the focal a little blurry. Add the text and border, then I'd do another Region filter to make everything but the focal darker - and/or a vignette to top it off.

So something like this:

This is all done in Photoscape so there are some stuff I'd like to do differently that I can't really in that program, but I think it's a pretty clean banner and pretty simple to make for your own guide(s) and it's a free program after all.

For the rest of your questions, definitely aim to get a PNG instead and always look for high quality BIG splash arts. So think 1920x1080 at least, but there are 4k width versions too. When you shrink those, the quality is great.

The shadow (of the text) might be a bit too far away from the text for my liking, so I'd change the X distance personally. Also some of your text is out of the bounds of the banner so obviously you want to avoid that.

thank you jhoijhoi for the signature <3

@ Jovy you are a great teacher! :)

Your image is definitely better than mine, and there is a lot to learn from your style.

I'll try again with a couple of different images during this weekend, but probably I won't reach a final result before the end of this month. Anyway, if you don't mind I continue to post here my attempts, your comments are really useful
(and I am also thinking to leave to your hands the final ToC style, 'cause I won't be able to reach even half of your quality, but I enjoy trying :D)

edit: I just saw your name is not shown in my signature. But the code say differently:

Why? what's wrong?

Feel free to post here :) good luck and have fun!

edit: your signature is too long, it doesn't fit in the box :) you can lower the height of the sigs a little bit to fix that. [img= etc height=175] might be enough (though I'm not bothered, you don't have to have the credit in there)

Thanks :)

oh, yes, I forgot about height limits. But I edited with height=100 and it still doesn't show your name.
And I know I don't "have to", but I think you deserve this :D

edit: ok it works if the images is really small. I do not know... I'm looking for a nice solution

I like the blur effects, they do a great job of creating a sense of depth while drawing focus to the center of the signature. :D

The borders on top and bottom are pretty good at creating a sense of unity as the color is used with the text as well.

edit: sorry, should have asked if I could cnc D:
