Views: 1167 Hi & First Thoughts From A SMITE Player

Hi everyone,
Mostly wanted to say hi, and to share some thoughts. Just a warning, this will be TL;DR unless you're bored.
Quick intro, I'm from the bastard MOBA stepchild, SMITE, and am the moderator at SMITEFire. And no, I'm not a great player, I just love the game and have written a lot, e.g. my Conquest guide (same mode type as Summoner's Rift).
At work, 3 coworkers and I have "Switch club," and on lunch breaks we often play Mario Kart (and have Mario Party / Smash Bros on preorder). One of them just built a PC and wanted to start playing something on that platform as well. For some reason (masochist?) they chose LoL. It's not going to ever get hardcore, just something fun to play, but in that, I still want to be able to know WTF I'm doing, at least to some degree.
I've been using Wayne as a resource (also Devampi, but I'm not sure what name he uses here) just to help familiarize myself with LoL. Obviously due to SMITE, I know all the general MOBA concepts...roles, farming, freezing/pushing, warding, importance of objectives, etc. I've also gone through The All Tomato's beginner guide and watched some videos.

I too am in the 40something crowd though I have been playing league since about the end of Season 2.
If you've got time and the interest to watch videos on how to play league I would suggest the
UNSWLoLSoc Video Series on Youtube
They literally have just about everything you need to know about playing the game and have broken in down into like 15-20 minute chunks. There are some that are a titch dated, but the basics don't really change.
I would say to be patient with yourself. There are A LOT of moving pieces to league and you don't pick them all up overnight.
Sounds like you are playing some PvP which is good. Bots are fine for the first few levels but I was shocked by how much harder PvP was, so I tend to recommend getting into PvP relatively early to take your lumps until you can figure out how far away to stand from a

Regarding your link to UNSWLoLSoc (whew), I've watched 7 of the videos now...first 3, and I picked some specific others (how to get fed, minion crash dive, manipulating back timings, playing losing lanes).
I will admit that laning is way more complex and technical in LoL compared to SMITE. In SMITE, things are typically a lot more straightforward, at least with regard to the Duo (bot equiv) lane and mid...you're mostly trying to outclear the wave to poke the enemy as much as possible or get to the jungle to get your camps/steal theirs. Last-hitting isn't as important there either.
So I'm having some trouble fully understanding these concepts...like just the first one (Trading Stance) and how/when I should use. Of course, his target audience is for more experienced people than me, so he's sort of assuming people know basic matchups and champion strengths/weaknesses/ranges etc.
Mostly I'm playing PvP Rift (no other modes so far) and it's strongly what I prefer here. In SMITE, I play all modes (all PvP of course). LoL's coop's Intermediate AI is just wonky. They don't jungle, they don't
One other thing I notice...I like that standard wards (which are free, yay!) regen use over time, but dang they don't last long at all.
Anyway, yeah, definitely enjoying it (more than I thought I would TBH), and I'll just keep plugging away. I don't get a lot of time to play (mostly only at night after my kids are down to bed), so it'll be slow going. In the meantime, I'll just keep reading and watching.

With trading stance you do need to know what the enemy is capable of doing in return, because they may us an ability on you instead of an AA and of course you have the support to consider.

For third-party sites, LeagueSpy is the official MOBAFire network site so obviously I have to suggest that one :P. OP.GG only uses stats from the Korean server so it's a bit different. Lolalytics is another popular site that uses worldwide stats (just like LeagueSpy), so I'd recommend one of those.
You can set up your own personal builds in the game client by clicking the Collection tab and then selecting Items. You can create a build to be used by all champions, several champions or just one champion -- whatever you prefer. When you open the shop in game, you can select the little dropdown arrow to switch between any available builds for your current champion. The game will remember which build you had selected and default to it next time you play that champion.

I think we communicated once...months ago, I was on the site perusing the general features so I could see what I wanted to request for SF, and my login won me a skin...so since I didn't play LoL at the time, I told you (or was it another Manager?) to just regift.
Anyway, I'm guessing Wayne's comments went something like this:

I'm down with LeagueSpy...I like that it gives insights. Am I missing more detailed stats (like those found in game after the match, providing hard numbers on things like damage to champs/total damage, damage to objectives, damage taken/mitigated, healed, etc.)?
I did set up personal builds (including a Warwick one based on your guide)...and am very appreciative of that. That in-game system is definitely superior to SMITE's, where only one custom build list per god is allowed.
For LeagueSpy post-game stats, you can find damage dealt, kill contribution and creep score in the circle graphs on the match summary page. There are some more detailed stats on the Insights page but I think a few things like total healing done aren't there yet. We're still working on expanding our data set for LeagueSpy and adding more detailed tabs for people who like to get into the nitty gritty of each match. You should also be able to find some of the post-game stats you mentioned in the game client itself, just go to your match history.
Good luck if/when you decide to start learning jungle. It's a pretty complex role to get into but it can be a lot of fun.
Thanks for the additional info. LeagueSpy's interface doesn't seem that intuitive for me but maybe it's because the game itself is still new.
I'll go step by step from your post. So, the champs:
About the shards you have to understand first one thing: which will be your first role? you'll be main ADC, supp, top...? Once you know this, you have to decide on your secondary role and here you have more liberty. For example, I main mostly mid, but my secondary roles are top and supp so I know that I Will discard every adc/jng shards. For now sit on your shards,
About knowledge, I will say to you what I have done when I started playing: I literally studyed every champ and every skill for... 3 weeks I guess, but the best thing you can do is experience them by yourself, you will learn everything over time.
For the build, you can't save it in-game, there is a tab in your profile (should be the last one) where you create the build for the champ you select for the map you select. Then in-game there is a little triangle near the top left corner of the shop (near "recomended" or what is written) and there you select it
