First of all I'm not gonna vote.
Why would you play lane Udyr? I played lane Udyr when I started playing League of Legends but I completely lost my interest in him. He's just too weak, at least I couldn't.
Later I tried a jungle build and it was way more fun (and imo easier) to play. New players should probably use this route.
As I have said above this guide aims to avoid jungle for new players. I definitely agree that jungling is the best possible choice with Udyr, but I don't find laning that bad at all. Stunning with bear can easily open up ganks and turtle can easily be used to avoid harassment.
Imo I prefer Trinity Force to Frozen Mallet on Udyr just because he keeps proccing it. The other stats are useful as well, especially the movement speed.
I choose a more health oriented route to allow for more survivability when it comes to learning Udyr. I agree that
Don't look down on Turtle Stance though. It's great to counter burst damage. Let's say that you have 100 Magic Resist, Turtle Stance maxed out and 500 magic damage incoming. You will only lose 30-60 hp (250-280hp without it).
Phoenix is good for its itemless damage output if you consider its an AoE. Tiger scales greatly but its only single target. Btw Phoenix works well together with Tiger because it increases you attack damage ;)
I haven't ever tried Youmuu's, but it does sound very nice. As for
find it useless. I just stress that it isn't made for full team fight tanking. Popping that and running in is smart, but it won't save you from a good Ashe or Master Yi.

Now onto items, consider getting a Banshee's Veil instead of Randuin's Omen if you have trouble with CC or magical damage.

Ever tried Youmuu's Ghostblade on Udyr. It's great imo. You could get it instead of The Black Cleaver, although it's a great item on Udyr as well^^ Just consider it.
