I always knew I could lock and unlock my screen. I don't leave it unlocked 100% of the time though. I lock it on my champion (with 'Y' instead of holding 'space') sometimes when I'm going through the jungle. I also lock on myself when I know where all the enemy champions are. I will often unlock to see what is going on and find entrance/exit positioning. I usually unlock it while I'm in a lane though so I can easily harrass and keep a good eye out for possible ganks and situations across the map.
Playing with your screen unlocked 100% of the time is not necessary, but knowing how to and using that ability is definitely required.
I will lock it on ocassion because it's never ever fun to get hit from the side of your person that you can't see, or sometimes even get hardcore CCed and die before you can do enough of anything about it to make a difference. When I first started playing unlocked, I died...a lot

I don't use spacebar to "lockon". Instead you should learn the use of the F keys (F1,F2,F3,F4, and F5) holding F1 is the same as holding space, you can press F2 through F5 to look at your allies, and then press F1 to quickly get back to yourself. Fkeys are essential especially in high ELO, need to check your jungler real quick to see if he's okay? Now you can do it quickly and get back to your champ with ease. Top getting ganked and you have teleport? Use the Fkey's to get to your ally quicker for fast choice on positioning.
