WotA isn't good unless you have heavy damage casters on the team.
I really can't see how Archangel's Staff would be more useful than Deathcap. She doesn't have mana trouble enough to justify it.

I'm a strong independent black mage who don't need no mana.
With a predominantly AP build I can heal over 1100 damage with wish and nearly 800 damage with Astral Blessing. I'm not saying she needs it to be useful, I'm just wondering why no one seems to care about the immense healing power of an AP Soraka.
I'm not saying AA staff over deathcap, I'm saying AA, RoA, and Deathcap lol. Soraka may not actually have mana problems but Archangel lets you spam forever. I never run out of mana, something I see Soraka players whining about.

She needs to be able to withstand dives more than she needs AP. The best way to survive dives is to build durability.

Rod of ages, Abyssal Scepter, Zhonya's hourglass....all AP survivability items. Playing Soraka without AP feels like playing AD (no crit) Ashe. Sure it can work just fine, but you're not utilizing her full potential. An AP Soraka can actually do enough damage with starcall+infuse to kill someone who dives her at a turret, or heal enough to get away (if she's taken good summoner spells). A support Soraka can't even heal enough to save her allies in most cases, let alone herself (especially if anyone on the enemy team has ignite).
The reason people don't build AP soraka is because normally you don't get the 50~ assists to support such a build, so they stack lucky picks, and if the game goes on long enough, buy tanky items so she doesn't get insta-killed.

Soraka is one of the best farmers in the game, if you can't get enough farm with her you're doing something wrong.
Aegis is always good of course, and I do get one lucky pick then a philostone. GP/5 items take time to pay for themselves before you get any bonus gold off them, so once you have one or two you should get items you intend to keep. RoA should be a core item then, since it gives you AP and makes you tankier at the same time.

Kage's Lucky Pick: 5 gp/10 = effectively 2 gp/second so with 1 you'll have an average of 3 gold/second
765 gold/3 gold (every second)=255 seconds/60=4.25 minutes (AKA 4 min 15 sec)
Philostone: 800/3=266.666666.../60=4.44 seconds (better buy for the stats you get since it only takes around 13 more seconds to pay for itself and you might actually build one of the items it build into)
