Just curious....I've been doing it on a few of the casters I play and noticed it gives a good early game AP boost...and wondered how well it would work on an AD person...

You mean when you have no AP?
Y, real good.
Playing casters? Have mana? Use utility.
Die too much with utility? Be DEFENSIVE and focus on farming (or letting your partner farm when a supporter).

I start with AP items and runes so it does give me a boost...I only do it on a few of the more support-y ones that need the defenses. I do 9-0-21 with nukes and such.
Starting with AP items other than Doran's Ring is BAD.
Runes should equal 15AP and with a D ring you'll be at 30AP. That's 31AP with Ardor.. Seriously.. such a minuscule difference.. Utility just does EVERYTHING better.
Really, pretty much ALL casters should be using 21 utility.

The couple of champs I do it with I do it because I already build them semi-tanky. When I said "a few" I literally mean a few.

Seriously though; masteries are hardly about playstyle when playing a caster. They're pretty set in stone.
Also; the WHOLE defense tree gives exactly 10MR, 10armor (Tenacity can be translated into 4 of each) and 48HP in terms or durability. The other bonuses are not worth mentioning on laners.
Just use armor seals, MR glyphs, HP quints and 21utility. You'll notice a big difference.
