Neither is better than the other overall, both serve different roles.
I will say that I find AP Yi a lot more fun.

AP Yi has a SUPER STRONG early game and fades off mid to late game.
AD Yi has a SUPER STRONG end game and isnt that great early.
Both if fed will do amazing but both can fail miserably.
I had 2 games where I played AP YI and there was an AD Yi on the other team. I should look for the screenshot if I took it, but we had nearly the same CS. But we had the exact same kills deaths and I had one more assist than him. We both had 5 towers dropped.
I dont think either one is better than the other. Its playstyle and team comp. Most will see a Yi and auto make Thornmail. Being AP, Its worthless against him. But MR shuts him down.

True, I like the AS/AD Yi more. But AP Yi is just fun to play. You have one giant nuke...and you can out heal the entire team smacking you lol.
But you have nothing after that Alpha strike but little girly slaps.
You have a nuke and a 3-4 shot pistol. Lich bane will only proc so many times. And, if you use meditate or Highlander to proc it, you have no defense unless you get a kill.
