melee carries need more bulk because they are in the middle of the action. just look how they built noc on dh. more of a tanky dps. olafs ult is a good way to fix melee carries i think and also the spell combination of noc beeing able to CC and able to block cc and not less important having a poking abillity(with the effect to speed you up). not to speak of his distance closer which obvoiusly closes a lot of distance.

Even then, melee characters still need some sort of natural CC mitigation (noct spell shield, olaf ult) or need to be able to build tanky but still be potent (Olaf, Irelia). Hopefully they release more champions like that or release tanky damage items (something like a RoA for AD, maybe an AD Rylai's).

You're asking for a DPS that can survive in the middle of a battle. The problem there, is you create DPS, that is also a tank. You've just made Tanks and DPS obsolete.
It's a nasty paradox, and the reason that Melee Carries are likely going to remain in the Assassin/Clean-up category. It's a limitation in the mechanics of the game which may be impossible to overcome while still maintaining balance.

No, you're wrong. This is only the case where if the damage and health provided from said item that would help the DPS was wayy too much. Like 2000 gold for 55 AD and 400 HP? That'd be ****ing overpowered. Of course there's a fine line to draw where you say okay X amount of AD and X amount of HP for X cost (along with any items that are X AD and X AR/MR) is imbalanced. It isn't a mechanical limitation of the game, it's just like providing a little stepping stone for AD melee carries. Xin Zhao can build tanky and still do fine damage, but that's because of his skills and ability to do % damage. He doesn't completely void the role of a tank and DPS.
Also recognize if you build AP with resistances (rylai's, roa) then you give up pure damage (rabadon's). DPS don't have that choice. DPS go pure AD and throw some purely tank/resist items on in order to survive more but don't have the option of choosing a healthy/damag-ey item route.
