So later today I have a tourney match where I'm going to have to lane Irelia against an Udyr. Udyr generally being picked as a counter to Irelia scares the **** out of me already. I've played lane Udyr a couple of times and both his burst harass and sustain are ******ed. What would be my best approach in this lane?

I was thinking of even going as far as using AS marks to proc my W heal more. I'm also debating whether I should start boots + pots, shield or cloth + pots. Rushing wriggles whichever item I start with. Maxing W for sustain and picking E at level 1 to counter double tiger even.

So yeah, thoughts?

Personally. I would just farm. If he engages you simply stun/slow and step back if Udyr keeps pressing you then let him push the lane a little. Just focus on farming. Make sure to get Magic Resist Glyphs considering tiger and phoenix stances both do magic damage. That will help you cut back on some of his burst.

Irelia's passive will make ganking you a difficult task so Udyr v. Irelia seems like a free farm lane. Both have solid sustain, Udyr simply has a universal stun rather than a situational one. You won't be able to push him out of the lane, but you should be able to farm quite easily. Udyr doesn't have any real way to deny you seeing as he is melee.

I'm probably going to start with a shield, tp back asap for null mantle and vamp scepter + ward
then visage and boots buying a recurve for wits end whenever possible before or after boots.

Just built this in a practice game and it gave me enough sustain to tank a jarvan + minionwave for at least 6 seconds.

Seeing as our teamcomp kinda lacks a tank I'd probably go cdr boots and a sunfire after that. Finishing it off with GA and probably a mallet or late triforce

If you're not going for Triforce before 20-25 minutes don't even go for it imo. It's 4k late game you won't achieve.

You could do regrowth pendant-> philo stone->merc treads->triforce then build armor or MR as needed. But however you want to go is up to you. You're the one playing.

Regrowth will give you the needed sustain for early levels (coupled with your Life Steal). With a GP5 item you'll be all set to farm your way to a sheen then phage etc.

I don't like a philo stone against udyr, leaves me way too squishy imo.
