Eh, sorta. Median income in the US is ~$45,000. If you work for 44 years (21-65), that's a hair under $2 million ($1,980,000 to be exact). So depending on his age, it very well could let him retire early. Of course, this doesn't take into account stuff like pensions and taxes, but who cares about details in pipe dreams? :)
Edit: the above numbers are for household income, approximately 3 people. It's slightly higher with a four-person income and declines from there. Single and two-person households are also lower. Thus, $1 million is still a realistic amount to live off of.
