Items are strictly situational. I typically build WotA before Archangel's to give me more early game sustainability in a lane. I go Archangel's though before deathcap because i already have tears so it's cost is only 1860. And tears is always something you want first as karthus.

Eeh... Archangels Rush is kinda noob. You don't get much out of it, maybe 70 or 100 AP max, and then you waste your AP potential further by getting WoTA then Rylais.
Tear>Ruby Crystal+Boots>Deathcap> Finish Boots+ Catalyst The Protector> WoTA> Archangel's>Zhonyas

Played with this Karthus a lot, he really rapes face. I've seen him single handedly carry ranked games.
