mobafire is the site i use to find starter builds for characters i want to try out. i have been randomly looking around for different characters lately. there are some things i have seen since the day i joined that are not pleasant. i will address a number of issues with the guide storage. of course my concern will be targeted to the good quality builds that are hidden from public view due to the amount of spam builds. dont get me wrong, there are tons of excellent quality builds out there.

i noticed the lack of effort, sometimes completely lack of knowledge of certain characters causing many builds to have suboptimal standards, in other words, totally suck. for example, the 2 latest champions, lux and leblanc, have tons of builds that are not well-thought out or even took time to develop at all. albeit they are new champions. it seems if some players suddenly have an urge to make a build, does it, and lose interest half way into a build and completely gives up. therefore, we have pages of builds that are completely useless and takes up space. (i am not talking about the removed troll builds) of course, the rating system differentiates the good guides from the bad, and sorting them in terms of score helps the player to find the best build. but this cause several problems of relying too heavily on build rating, which can be very misleading. the top rated builds for some characters can be outdated and misleading. lets admit it, we all use the sort by rating function, and most of time if the scores between top rated and second highest rated differs by a large amount, we only look at one build. while most people enjoy the top build and perhaps have success with it, the newer builds that might be better or suited for different game scenarios are IGNORED. no one is ever going to bother looking for them anyways, since the amount of spam/low quality builds is too much and all mixed together in a low-to-no rating category.

what i recommend is the following:

1. emphasize on build quality in the editing stage of a build. for example, a pop-up reminding the guide creator to think about what they are going to talk about in a build. or a link to Dewo's build description guide

2. remove troll/trash builds with no or 2 lines of descriptions. or set a minimum limit for the descriptions. if the builds isnt complete, archive it. or be more responsive to reported builds.

example: http://www.mobafire.com/league-of-legends/build/anivia-huge-dmg-2700hp-24504

3. create categories for different style of play and ability to expand categories. for example, tank xin, dps xin, etc. this helps searching and allow innovation for new styles.

dont you love this? Champion is 2-3 days old and already superior masters claim they know everything...
I took the top build for her and... saw plenty of stuff that are not "well thought". She is still imbalanced at the moment so ppl that make guides in 1st week of the champ existance for me shouldnt be allowed to accumulate votes :)

Well obviously 55 people appreciated the build? Maybe it's not perfect but it seems to have helped some early adopters of the champion.

Posting builds with no description is not against any rules and I don't really see why it should be. Some people use this site as a tool to play with their own ideas or to share just their build with friends. We added the highlighting and filters on browse page so that if you don't want to see builds without descriptions you can filter them out. We can add these functions to other places as well if everyone thinks it would be better.

We have discussed expanding on this to better differentiate between builds and guides, where a guide has a lot more than just a 300 character description. We have also discussed adding some sort of tagging or category system to help you find what you're looking for more easily. When I've brought up these ideas in the past noone seemed very interested.

I also noticed that for most new champs, the second best build is often downvoted just because it is the second best. even if it is much better than the first one.

An example is Lux guides. now, for a while i had the second best build. The first build wasnt amazing, but then again neither was mine. i would say they were about equal in quality. Granted, this is before anyone knew how to play lux, which makes your point. but they were pretty similar in quality. so tell me how i can get SO many more downvotes than the top person? is it simply because im second? or what? i dont understand. i see it done all the time. downvote just because it is second best.

@matt

i think that posting a build without a description is not against any rules, BUT clearly it shows lack of interest in explaining about items or strategy for the general public. if they want to play with their own ideas or share with friends, archive it. publicly publishing their builds mean they have to explain why to do certain things certain way, otherwise it doesnt help anything. especially with a misleading title called "faceroll build champion X", followed by zero description, completely useless and wastes space. furthermore, many of builds for the same character are REDUNDANT, they share similar item order and strategy. of course i am not saying newers builds have to be different to be posted, but at least post detailed descriptions on the way YOU play the character.

i also dont want to say that the majority of players that post comments such as "holy sht bro nice build i got 22/0/30 first game with this build lool!" are noobs. especially for newer characters, like dewo pointed, leblanc guides are just purely stupid. none of them, i guaranteed u captured the essence of leblanc and what she truly is. of course the riot staffs pointed this out as well, which would be more evident as the hotfix for leblanc came out.

p.s. my suggestions might not be all that viable, but i hope newer ideas can sprout from them.

Discounting the weights, your score is only 3% lower than his. He has more overall votes and so his score is weighted less heavily than yours. Maybe he edged your build out earlier and so he got a lot more views overall, and so more votes, but that will balance out in time. You guys are always questioning everyone's votes and trying to find a reason why they're wrong. Whatever people's reasons are for voting the way they do, it is their freedom to do so, whether you agree with them or not.

Just out of curiosity I compared votes between the two builds. Most people voted on one or the other and not both, and of those that voted on both many voted both up or both down.
