What other runes would you suggest though? Armour yellows aren't great on AP champs since they won't be laning against an AD champ.
I suppose you could get health per level yellows if you really wanted to? I know Potatis uses AP/lvl yellows on some of his casters too.

I find this quite untrue.
If you are going to last hit, most of the time, you are going to be using an ability or two, yea? They are most effective during the early game. While they don't make as much of an impact late game, because of your mana pool, they are still nice to have as the cushion of a couple more MP5 is always a great thing to have. It may mean the difference between the Ryze snare that saves you or, the 5 mana short of casting it.

I don't even use mana regen runes on Ryze, lols. :P
Once you get Tear it's pretty hard to run out on him, and I don't really have enough runepages to make one with mana regen but no AP.

I'm just using him as an example. He's the only champ I can think of with a ranged snare. :P
I run a mix of flat/scale mana reg seals that gives me from 2 to 6 mp5.
When I go AP mid, I really like having a good help in mp5 to harass as much as possible. To be honest, I've never really had a game where the two mid just went full farming all mid-game long. And as i tend to always start with boots + pot, having that nice little help does matter a lot.
When I go support, well, is it realy worth explaining it ? Even with a philo stone, no matter if you play aggressive or defensive, you really, really need that much mp5. Taric needs to spam stun as possible, Sona needs to spam aura to allo spam power chord, Janna needs to (reasonnably) spam her shield.
MP5 runes are totally, completely worth it.

I'm never wrong ; reality may be.
Sure, you should not push and you should lasthit. But that doesn't mean you don't use abilities to farm does it?
Karthus will surely use
Lay Waste to farm,
Morgana uses
Tormented Shadow,
Malzahar uses his
Malefic Visions etc.
Even champs that don't have great farming abilities will use their skills regularly (
Anivia trying to hit her enemy with
Flash Frost, for example).
I know what you're saying and AP champions shouldn't necessarily be oom without using mana regen runes, but they are useful.

What I never understood was why AP champs used mana regen runes (flat or scale, doesn't matter), at 0.065 x 9, they don't kick in until level 2, and then the 5 minutes between now and lvl 6 (assuming solo mid) You're playing Farmville: NPAL™ (Never Push, Always Last-Hit)
Which means you are barely using your skills, and your mana is probably fairly full anyway, so if your champ fell under the category that doesn't start off with a Doran's Ring or gets 3 points in Meditation (Very, very few and limited) or even a Meki pendant/Faerie charm if you're a support, then you're probably blessed with a spammable skill (Annie's Q, Malz's E, Cass's Passive)
By level 9, assuming annie hasn't killed you once or twice or vlad hasn't forced you to B yet, you're regening 5mp per 5 from those runes, which in a minute is 60, which if you're Sion with a doran's ring this amounts to 100, which lets you do either-or of his stun, or shield, not both
So if you're the mana-hungry type that gets either a tear or a catalyst, wouldn't your runes be used for you to hold-out until you get those, and by the time you get them, wouldn't the extra 5MP per-5 barely make a difference? Meaning, if you haven't been harassing then, they wouldn't outfarm you, then if you have been harassing, you'd be low mana either way. If you get kills, then you'd get catalyst/tear early, and if you get ganked or super shutdown because lolkassadin/veigar, wouldn't you lose the tower and thus end the laning phase?
Like the old perseverance mastery that'd only kick in until late game and even then you get 1HP-Per 5 only after you reach a natural 50HP-Per 5 and you needed 3 mastery points to do even this
It just seems like some sort of catch-22 here, does everyone else know something I don't or is it really a placebo
