OK, being that I'm a brand new player I'm probably not gonna fall in love with a carry type champion immediately, but I did fall in love with playing support. I usually play with 2 friends and they play great carries so I have my niche as a support laner. I fell in love with Soraka (Dat starcall man), but I'm looking to try other support champs. Anybody have any recommendations?

Support Pantheon. No lie, tried it a couple of times, and as long as your friends can play well, you can instagib your opposing lane if you and your lane partner run ignite. Just recently picked him up myself.

Sona, Janna, Alistar and such are kind of full supports. There are also semi supports like Lux, Zilean,..

I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not.

Taric

A stun.
A Heal.
Tanky.

What else could you ask for ;).

Honestly, I don't know who told you that you have to play supports as a new player. That's completely false. Supports, in my opinion, takes the most skills to play successfully. But if you insist and like supporting, I would suggest and strongly recommend Janna.

Why?

Janna can never die, can supply a lot of support for your team, has a variety of abilities that can help either you or your teammates in any teamfights. The con is that you cannot kill anyone 1vs1 though. You're a team player. Janna is a bit easier to learn since you are a ranged champion. I'd stay away from melee champions for now until you gain better mobility and experience in-game.

Incorrect ^

Janna's ult is a game change if done incorrectly, I feel she has the HIGHEST skill cap.

grab yourself Alistar and Sona. Then when you are done with those, grab nidalee or even blitzcrank for a more interesting position.
Thanks to Koksei, The_Nameless_Bard,JhoiJhoi, LaCorpse, JEFFY40HANDS and myself for the signatures! I am also a certified gangster.

You may want to give Karma a shot. She's a great support and also has great burst damage, making her very versatile. She's the second support I picked up after Janna and I've never looked back.
That awkward moment when a sentence doesn't end the way you think it octopus.

This. I need to do a video compilation of all of my fail Janna ults. Because they are hilarious and so very very bad. Janna ults can be the best thing ever. They can also be the single worst thing to ever happen to your team. You can pretty much ace yourself with one badly timed ult.

Not to say she isn't a fantastic support, because she is. Just... be willing to laugh at your mistakes and play with people who can do the same. =_=

Taric should be pretty easy to use or maybe Sona. Both of them are not too hard and provide great help on a team. I do agree with others that you need experience to play Janna well so it's better to avoid her for now.
