Honestly, I don't know who told you that you have to play supports as a new player. That's completely false. Supports, in my opinion, takes the most skills to play successfully. But if you insist and like supporting, I would suggest and strongly recommend
Janna.
Why?
Janna can never die, can supply a lot of support for your team, has a variety of abilities that can help either you or your teammates in any teamfights. The con is that you cannot kill anyone 1vs1 though. You're a team player.
Janna is a bit easier to learn since you are a ranged champion. I'd stay away from melee champions for now until you gain better mobility and experience in-game.

Why?

grab yourself Alistar and Sona. Then when you are done with those, grab nidalee or even blitzcrank for a more interesting position.

Thanks to Koksei, The_Nameless_Bard,JhoiJhoi, LaCorpse, JEFFY40HANDS and myself for the signatures! I am also a certified gangster.

Janna's ult is a game change if done incorrectly, I feel she has the HIGHEST skill cap.
This. I need to do a video compilation of all of my fail Janna ults. Because they are hilarious and so very very bad. Janna ults can be the best thing ever. They can also be the single worst thing to ever happen to your team. You can pretty much ace yourself with one badly timed ult.
Not to say she isn't a fantastic support, because she is. Just... be willing to laugh at your mistakes and play with people who can do the same. =_=
