Winter and I was discussing this topic a lot recently and I think it's a very interesting topic so I'd like to share it with everyone else.

It's all about the last episode in the anime where I think something that would change end was left out.
Oh and there will obviously be spoilers. (duuh)

This was my conclusion:

The Okabe from the first time jump has to be present during the second jump because:

1. The past has to happen for the present to exist and the past contains an Okabe that stabs Makise.

2. They're in the same time line. Which basically means that they didn't make a choice that changed anything before arriving where Okabe from the first jump was.

Time lines are made when choices that change something are made. All the smaller choices branch out from the big ones. It's impossible to change the current time line without changing the past. You can only affect which time line you'll end up in in the future (and thus change the present by changing the past). So basically a choice that would prevent Okabe from being where he was during the first jump the second time around would have to be made. That's also why you can't simply go back one second further than the first time, because you'll still be in the same line of events, the Okabe in the future will still come back and do what he did during his first jump.
(as a nice little comparison: ) Time branches like a road. You can't change your path without going back (or driving offroad like a mad person, but that's irrelevant in this comparison).

Time TRAVELING is only possible along the current time line (time line can ofc be changed when the traveling is over tho).
D-mails (mails sent to the past) change the past without physically traveling there. They're basically like a choice being sent to the past so that the present can change. They follow all the same rules of space and time.

Why time only branches outwards (like a treeee! :) ) :
Because you can't change the present unless you change the past. All choices you make in the present only have effects in the future. (present=the exact current moment. Don't get smart with me about the meaning..)

Np brah.

I'm interested in how others perceive it.
I think the only other ones that have seen it are Xenasis and Dotter tho.

I had the exactly same thoughts after watching it and felt quite dissapointed, because I really wanted the ending to be perfect, because the rest is so good.. So I tried to force myself to find a valid reason that would mean that there isn't a plot hole xD

But to me, it also seemed kinda messed up, I felt like the writers just wanted to end it fast and that they didn't really think it through properly, but that might just be me..

The only thing I can come up with that might be the reason is that they are in Stein's Gate and other unexplained rules apply to that timeline xD -> But that would just be too easy :p

I thought the exact same thing. It's not wrong, it just means we perceive things differently. Every time... in the same way...

Yay! Perception!...Though quite honestly, I think of something else as well....Just not what you're thinking. Ah well.

And yes, you make my head spin. Somewhat. Time-lines? Ugh....

Will have to read it later-.-

I also thought that it might be a plothole when they delete the info in SERN's database.. Wouldn't that require that SERN hadn't seen it at all before?
Not that I firmly think it is a plothole, I'm just trying to bring more stuff to this debate :p

@Dotter
The database thingie is probably not a plot hole. The fact that they got hooked up with SERN's particle accelerator is very weird on the other hand..

@Astrality
Something else? Do share.
They explain the space and time rules in the anime itself through time lines too :P
(they call them "world lines" tho. I just think time line fits better)
