He isn't counting boots as an item in terms of slots.

I'm thinking we have 6 slots available... i use up 5, i have 1 slot left, how do i combine things in 1 slot to gain a finished item?

Nope its not like in DotA. In case that you have only 1 free slot you can buy only 1 item. So if you want to get a big item that is combined from 3 smaller items, you can only buy 1 small item and then wait till you get cash for full recipe.

Aah, like that. Well, you will just have to save up, you have 6 slots to put items in, that's it. If you have let's say a Blasting Wand and you want a Void Staff but you don't have the space to buy an Amplifying Tome you will just have to hold on to some money a little bit longer ^^

You can just buy the full item outright if you have enough money. You don't actually have to buy any of the recipe items to get to the full item in LoL.
For example if I have an empty slot and 2295 gold I can simply buy an entire Void Staff without buying any of the smaller items first.
