You should try Master Yi, he is an awesome melee champ. I use him 90% of the time, he is a very good top laner imo. Keep using alpha strike on the minion that is closest to you and you will be okay. Try to use this build. Berserker's Greaves -> Blood Thirster -> Phantom Dancer -> Black Cleaver -> Phantom Dancer -> Infinity Edge -> Sell Berserker's Geaves and buy another Phantom Dancer.

He is, but his jungle is too good and ganks are too fun.
My favourite melee champions to use are ones that have a ranged ability and some form of gap closer. The ranged ability allows you to harass easier or get those last hits if you must play defensive. The gap closer allows you to get in and throw down with your combo, or just break in on that squishy champion's face. Most of these ranged champions are extremely squishy, which is why they must rely on certain skil-sets to stay alive. A lot of melee champions have the gap closer to counter just that.
Gap closers are what sells a melee champ for me. Irelia and Wukong are my favourite melee champs for exactly that reason. You can get last hits so easily with these champs and it means you can harass ranged without getting slashed to pieces early on.

If you are having trouble with harass in real games, you can always let the enemy lane push you back to your tower. This will let you farm in (relative) peace beneath the safety of your turret for awhile.
For Wukong specifically, you can harass ranged characters really effectively with your E -> Q - > w+retreat combo. This lets you jump onto the ranged person and smack them a few times with your staff before going invisible with W (Decoy) and retreating back safely out of range.
Additionally, as a rule ranged characters will not be building defensive items - if you are stuck laning against an Ashe, for example, she will be focusing on items that let her kill effectively - not tank you. That means she is Squishy! Use it to your advantage :)
Good Luck!

You can't peddle papooses with a dancing monkey.
You really do not need that many Phantom Dancers before Infinity Edge, especially if you plan to build Thirster and Cleaver before it. You are wasting an aweful lot of crit.
I love fighting against Yi. Thornmail always annihilates them because most of them don't know how to build damage early enough to make a difference.
You know what I like to build on Yi? Hextech...
