This is very similar to the people who claim Lux isn't viable as an AP carry because she's outclassed by most of the newer AP carries. There's a difference between inherently not viable and outclassed. Irelia's ability to jungle in the first place is not the problem...it's the fact that other junglers are better when played equally well.
Eh...you'd be shocked by the amount of people who say Lux is terrible.
And regardless...is it really that important? There are far worse unviable junglers that people use anyways...I would rather see jungle Irelia over jungle Kayle any day.

Well yes, yes it is important. Understanding that my opinion MAY be from a game where someone improperly played her, but also understanding that (although I main mids I enjoy the jungle too) there are far better picks. Choosing to jungle Irelia over jungle Kayle makes sense IN THAT SITUATION. Picking Irelia over any other jungler when available DOES NOT.
In the end you believe Irelia is a viable jungler. I do not (using my definition of viable ofc) "viability implies a champion can hang with any other champion filling the same role" to clarify my point/opinion.
