I saw somewhere, I think on another forum, that the Heart of Gold takes 27 minutes to pay itself off. And seeing how you start with about 475 gold, and games are about 30 minutes long, it almost usually will never pay itself off. And if it does than you wont be getting much profit out of it. Although the 250 health is good there are other items you can buy that give about the same amount and cost less. Does anyone else think that we can do without the Heart of Gold?

Well if you are getting Randuin's Omen or Locket of the Iron Solari it certainly is worth it.

In case you don't, a quick calculation: Heart of Gold costs 825 gold. I believe that when you sell it you get 413 gold back, so you need to earn 412 gold before you profit. You gain 5 gold per 10 seconds, so 1 gold every 2 seconds. That means it will take 824 seconds, or ~14 minutes, before you start profiting. So actually it is pretty good, but you should consider Kage's Lucky Pick as well. It is slightly cheaper so you will profit a bit sooner. But obviously it gives different stats...

Hard choice ;D

Depends if you're building anything with it and/or you want health. Or if you're playing support.

What a ridiculous notion.

However I should note, I do not buy GP10 items unless I intend to finish them.

and games are about 30 minutes long

What an idea ...

HoG can become a Solari or a Randuin, two nice or even really nice items.
Doing an HoG early brings you some HP that help surviving in solo top or duo bot environment (depends of the support). As you will make it become an other item, you can keep that HoG while building Warden Mail or Emblem of Valor.
The HoG is slowly making gold, making the price of the finished item go down. Instead of 2225 or 3075 gold, you can hope for a cheaper Solari or Randuin's.

Making the price of Randuin's going down like that also helps tanky jungler which won't have that much gold by jungling+ doing few successful ganks to finish their "core" items, as Randuin's is often.

Myeap. GP10 items, in my opinion, shouldn't be purchased if you don't intend to finish them.

The only exception is philosopher's stone can be just what you need sometimes in lane to spam skills and then be sold later, and it's basically a free investment to win lane sometimes if you know when/why.

I just had to post here when I saw this thread.

They are gabillion miles from useless, they repay themselves, give stats during the time repaying, and are always built into another item someone is going to use.

HoG is one of the better ones I would think, it allows all supports to be less squishy.

pots>phil stone.

Phil stone is bad if not intended to finish it. But why wouldn't u? it gives awesome stats!

OT:
HoG gives nice stats, and it's kinda cheap and an easy way to get a decent mid-game advantage cuz the 2 steps of buying it are cheap 475 and 325 i believe it is. If u can however get/finish another item i would put it before HoG since health alone is pretty near useless in lane.(unless support)
Ty MM and Blood for the sigs :3 | Rammus is comming back - heard it here first!

Pots are not > phil stone. Pots aren't free and don't regenerate both HP and Mana consistently. Don't compare unlike things >:(

Hog is 475 and 350 I think. I agree rushing HoG in solo top or mid is begging to lose lane.

Some junglers can rush Philo HoG and most supports can as well.
