Dunno if it's just me, but on the first technique the first signature looks better :S Then again, I do hate extensive amounts of contrast...

Well the gradient mapping part is explained pretty plain.
There's more than just black and white,there's the popular blue-orange,default gradient maps from the editing programm you are using.There are also layer settings you could try out!

But great tutorial noneless.
