I didn't get it from the beggining either but I played some DoTA 2 and I realized.'
In DoTA 2 items like blood thrister and any other item that has life steal,won't stack with it unless it has an aura effect. As you purchase sorcere's shoes,the game considers that thats enough or something,buying void staff won't increase it at all,so it's a waste of gold. As you sell those boots and take something for some resistance you can delete the weakest stats and put the only one avaible,I hope I did answer your question.
