Basically, where you walk forwards and use the threat range of your champion to force your opponent to move away from the minions and lose xp/gold.

Although your champ doesn't have to have range.
If one goes in the brush and the other farms,
that can zone some people too, as they're scared
of the champ in the brush.

Shurelia explains zoning nicely, so i suggest to check out that video.
Basically what it is is getting total control over your opponent, you need to make them scared to come and last hit, and if they do you give them the hurt to the face ^^.
Succesful zoning usually leads to lane dominance, which usually leads for a huge advantage to your team, unless of course the enemy gets back in the game by getting fed later in the game or farming like crazy.
The most common way to zone in a duo-lane (which is most likely bot ) is for the support to camp the brush and poke the enemies when they get close, occasionally providing some crows control so the carries can also poke with out much retaliation from the enemies.
In the top lane it's just who can do more damage in a 1v1 exchange, champions with sustain usually triumph over champions without sustain, but champions with higher burst damage that can kill the enemies in two -three rotations will force the sustain champion to play more safely, thus the burst champion gets somewhat of a farm advantage.
In mid lane is who can burst the other one from full hp to none quickest.
For example, if you play Cassiopeia you know that you can burst someone like Twisted Fate in a few twin-fangs you can kill him, so hes forced to stay back and farm with cards because he knows that if he gets closer a flash+ult in to a jungle gank will get him killed and set him behind.
I hope i managed to somewhat help you out.

Good points all, i've used Shurelia's video many many times when teaching my mentees about the game, and it is a very good video (altho the voice is kind of grating, i can get past it because of the wealth of knowledge it throws my way).

Hey, if you liked any advice i gave, be sure to +rep me! Oh, and check out my Shaco and Maokail lorecraft in my Blog! I'm a starving artist in need of attention, so please feel free to read, respond, and critique me! Please? Anybody that leaves a comment (good or bad) will receive a +rep!
