How much is skill, how much is champs?!

Hey guys, question coming out of the low-elo games I play in. I definitely have a lot to learn, but I've gotten to the point where I pretty much have timers on both team's buffs, can be pretty confident in where the enemy jungler is, etc. Basically, I feel like I have pretty good map awareness.

My question is how much of whether you win or not really depends on player skill, and how much depends on champions you pick. I run into this alot, for instance, if I pick mundo to jungle, well, I can just abuse their jungler all game, and pretty much snowball the lane. If I pick someone who is NOT a good duelist in the jungle, I ahve to pray that I don't get abused in return, and hope that my lanes don't push so I can at least get a gank off somewhere. Also, in my estimation, I am usually baffled when people die in 1v1 or 2v2 situations in lane, w no jungler assistance. They of course immediately rage at the jungler for not ganking, to which I respond - why fight?

Another example is mid lane. I have great success with someone like fizz, who has great potential to land a 1v1 kill at level 6, and great roaming potential. Other laners though don't have that kill potential, and I really struggle on those kind of champs. It just seems like you put yourself at a MASSIVE disadvantage by choosing champs that can't overtake a game completely on their own, without relying on others.

I really would love to play more support/utility based champs (not necessarily supports), but I just can never seem to win much with them.

So what do you think, should I only be picking champs that can snowball a lane or jungle and the game themselves?

You ask some good questions. And you WILL get an answer ! xD

I think it's impressive you have timers on the buffs.
That's definitely a pro tip right there, keep it up. I don't
know if you do so, but using some wards at the respective buffs
and/or lanes is also a good thing to do. Ideally, your whole team
should have a high level of map awareness, yet of course in reality,
most don't. But you can help people survive by warding for them.

I think it can vary a lot, in regards to whether player skill and
champions picked, decide the outcome of games. For example, if I play
Kassadin mid and faceroll a Talon (one who's meant to counter me) it
could of course mean I snowball and end up facerolling his team too.
So of course, that's in part due to my skill, but also the skill of
the other player. Now, getting some MR (Magic Resist) would help against
a fed mage naturally and that in turn can diminish how effective I am.
But if I picked a champion such as Vayne for instance, who does True
Damage, then I pretty much hurt no matter what. So in that regard, quite
a lot can depend on who you pick; but equally well on who you face off against.
Remember, League is a team game, so your victory depends on the combined
skill level of your team, in relation to the enemy team. You can be the most
epic jungler ever and feed your carry like it's no bodies buisness, but if
your carry dies 10 times every 5 min, then it wont help much.

Picking champs that are liable to getting early-game kills is of course fun and
rewarding. However, you don't have to get kills to be successful in lane. If champion
X doesn't have an easy time getting early kills, but harasses like a boss, then you'd
still be able to at least ruin the other guys lane. That of course results in the weakening
of his mid and late game play if you're lucky and that in itself, is an advantage
for you and your team. Many times, as long as you farm, don't die, communicate with
your team and (if possible) deny the opponent farm, then you've won your lane.

Also, give no ****s about people who rage at you for not ganking at 1:02 because they died,
because they can just learn to keep their distance, use dem pots if they have them and generally
just play more passively, until they actually have more than 1 ability levelled. If you're
the jungler, YOU decide where to gank and when. Many of the people who rage at your lack of ganks, are oddly enough, also the ones who are always halfway towards the enemy tower too.

I like support champions too (even though yes, I come across as The Alpha Male around
these parts, no doubt) and as such, I play Alistar jungle. I can recommend it. He has
epic ganks and you don't have to wait for your teammates lanes to get pushed, since
he can towerdive quite easily; especially when he reaches level 6 and can use his
damage-reducing ultimate. That way, you'll hopefully secure your teammates a good
start, as well as act as the support/tank late game. In your travels around the jungle,
you can also contribute to your teams survival, through map awareness, using wards.

I think you should pick champions which fit into your team comp. It's risky if you end
up in a game where you're the only one carrying like a boss. Because if you die, then your
team probably can't do much and if you're dead for a long time, then your Nexus will
eventually blow up, As said before, team work is important. Games where you can do
absolutely everything yourself, are few and far between. Communicating with your team,
also in a positive manner, may also help your situation. Some people are trolls and want
you to rage. Some people are ignorant and don't know what they're doing wrong and some
people just suck and don't give a damn. But that doesn't mean you can't try encourage
and calling "ss" or "mia" or whatever you use and so forth. Personally, I'd rather have
5 champs snowballing hard, rather than just 1.
