http://venturebeat.com/2012/07/25/valves-gabe-newell-talks/

Gabe Newell - chief and co-founder of Valve - is worried about the closed nature of Windows 8 and hints at hurried development of the Steam Linux port.

I've heard about it coming before the end of 2012, but that's only a rumor as far as I know.

Nice interview. I like his views on the future of gaming platform, but I think he's lacking a key technology that we already possess.

In order to fix the "god doesn't heal amputees" problem, there have been several attempts at recreating mechanic limbs, just like automail. Obviously this isn't new to anyone, what is new is the rather recent developments in this technology.
By figuring out which part of the brain is responsible for each arm/hand movement it is possible connect electrodes in the brain and remotely control an arm. This has been tested on a chimpanzee and worked perfectly. The chimpanzee noticed that the robotic arm would mimic his right arm's exact movements, so for some moments the chimpanzee had 3 arms: 1 left arm, 1 right arm and the remote controlled robotic right arm. This is a rather huge accomplishment because the arm is not being controlled by the nerves but by the brain itself, but it's still not very useful for gaming. What is useful is what happened next, the chimpanzee was able to fully control the robotic arm without moving his own, the arm was no longer mimicking his right arm but was a separate arm altogether.

If that can be done, then for gaming it would be the single best input interface. You wouldn't need the robotic arm at all, you would just need to decode each movement and what it would do. Imaginary arms pressing imaginary keys or making imaginary movements. This is actually possible and has already been accomplished, it's a real thing. I'm a bit sad that Gabe Newell doesn't know about this, I'm sure it's what he would aim for. The only problem is the fact that you need some electrodes in your brain.

Seriously? Nobody's interested in the fact that Steam might reach Linux this year?

To clarify; Gabe is scared of how microsoft will manage their app store and their software. They might close it off completely (I.E; only allow programs to be installed via their app store) and shut down any competing services (remove them from the app store). They also might force people to pay rent for using services for windows. The possibilities are horrible.

yeah and blizzard is right behind gaben on these statements.

i always knew linux would eventually take over as most used os, but i thought that would be from people realizing it was better than windows, not microsoft ****ing up big in the name of greed.

MS is naturally ******ed that way.
There's many Linux people not happy about
this developement, as this might cause Linux
to perhaps become mainstream. If that happens,
well then the flood gates get opened up to commercialization
and other vulnerabilities. I'm using Win 8
right now and it's different, no doubt. I do like
some features, but... Closed systems in this day and
age Ehh..

Linux is an open and free platform operating system
where you can develope other Operating Systems.
So like Linux is the core and then you
can make a Linux distribution, "distro".
There's many Linux distros, such as Ubuntu,
Vector, Arch, Gentoo and so on. All these
are operating systems in their own right,
just like windows. The difference is, they're
all open-source, so anyone can look at the code,
change it and spread it. It's one of the most
secure platforms around. Because of this freedom, that
you don't have to pay licensing fees, it's the most popular
operating system for when you want to create servers for instance.
Because, you don't have to pay anyone and you can change it to
suit your needs exactly. It's also widely used in the supercomputer
field, since it's very modular and doesn't take up much space either.
There's just so many positive points about Linux. If you want
to get into Linux, I can recommend trying out ubuntu.
