An assassin's job is to take down a single target quickly, even if it means they die in the process. They can be both AP and AD, but are always burst basted. They have strong burst and great gap closers and escapes.
LeBlanc is a great mage-assassin, as she can get in, burst down a target with the use of
Mimic, and then get out with
Distortion. The downside is that they are very squishy, and can be easily stopped with good coordination. A single stun can ruin an assassin's life.
As for anti-mages, their job is pretty much to be counter specialists. They excel at taking down some mages, but fall to others. Thus they are best employed as counterpicks to some mages in draft pick. They have abilities which are tailored to destroying casters of all types, like spell shields, silences and the like. A good example would be
Talon, as he has a rather lengthy silence and the kit to quickly bring down a caster. Not all anti-mages are also assassins, for example,
Veigar is dedicated to countering AP casters with
Primordial Burst and carrying his team later in the game via the passive of
Baleful Strike. Another good exaple would be
Kassadin, thanks to his kit in general.
As for the necessity of these champions, well, as you might have noticed, being an assassin or an anti-mage is not necessarily what makes a champion, but rather a part of the champion's role.
Veigar is, before all, a mid AP caster.
Talon is, before all, an AD caster.
Kassadin is known as a slippery caster thanks to his
Riftwalk, even though his entire kit is built around countering other casters. They are not necessary, they are just options to deal with a champion or a team composition. What is necessary in the current metagame is a caster mid, a jungler, a bulky solo top, and an AD carry+support bot. Beyond that, it is a realm of opportunities, and sometimes, having an assassin or an anti-mage is a good idea.

Nice essay Xenotechie, I give you an
A-. I did not understand what you meant about
Kassadin being bulky. If this is an insult to him,
he will silence you. Unlike his mum, he won't regret
doing so either. If you're also saying he's fat, I
condemn you to elo hell, because Kassadin tries his
best to get into the slimest suits you can get into.
You hit his vulnerable spot, by calling him fat.
In fact, his standard attire features a plate that
resembles a high degree of abdominal muscle tone,
in order for him to feel better about himself.
He already has a weak early game. Don't make him
suffer a weak post-match man.

Thanks, it helps a lot Xenotechie! But now , when i get a LeBlanc mid while i am Annie or something, what do i do? I find myself bursted down so quickly that i cant possibly farm without risking getting killed.
As the game would have it,

"Another really annoying person to go up against. With her Distortion, she can just use it to harass you, escape ganks, and much more. The bad thing is, she has 3 combo breakers: Silence, Snare, and Stealth. The Stupid 3 is what I call them. If she silences you in the middle of your combo, you are in dead water. With her extreme burst, she will be able to 2 shot you with Sigil of Silence and Mimic is she has a lot of ability power. On top of that, she has basically 3 escape methods (assuming she brought Flash): Distortion, Mimic, and Flash. That makes it really hard to gank her. Although, she is vulnerable to CC. If you can live through her burst, she is in dead water. It usually comes down to who bursts the other one first so make sure you are the one to burst her."

Against lb/kassa and so on try to build an early
Banshee's Veil and early mr it will work and if they dont get fed they become pretty useless while u will pown dem nubz

No one has mentioned one of the best andti-mids out there,
Galio? I mean talon and kat are pretty oout there, and
Veigar is dedicated to anti ap's, but
Runic Skin is just so baws. Builds tank and still deals stupid damage. AN early
Banshee's Veil makes any traditional mid you lane against worthless.

i have been playing LoL for quite a while now and i get the basics of team compositions and stuff, but lately i have come across two types of champions i do not really understand that much yet. You have the assassins, which i do not know from which champions those are, i guess poppy and talon are. They seem to excel at taking down a target very quickly similar to an AP nuker. And you have anti-mages, which are champions like LeBlanc that really do well versus your regular nuker like Annie and Ryze. My questions are, who are these champions, where do they belong and are they essential? Also, how do you counter said champions? It would be great if i could get some help with this.
