Only thing I can say is the lack of survivability other than HP pots. Against enemy champions with a lot of harrass I end up buying a lot of them, but once the damage starts to roll in it doesnt matter - by the time we have a fight, their at half HP already.

I absolutely LOVE hextech gunblade, if I'm doing well, I even stack an extra Hextech Revolver for the additional spellvamp ^_^.
As for item builds, would Deathfire Grasp be good after completing the boots? This is for taking on tanks, such as Mordekaiser. Any other recommendations?
Personally, I find that there are three ways to play Katarina:
The first two ways are as a three-champ AOE nuke that can
1) deal a load of initial damage to a team of few to no CC's
2) finish the team fight by shunpo'ing in and DL'ing near the end of a fight when CC's are exhausted
OR
3) as an assassin where you can focus on any one champion and finish him/her off by yourself assuming you are well-fed and leveled.
You are asking essentially the question of which style to use. If you insist on being able to deal with any one champion, then by all means go ahead with deathfire grasp as that is the right thing to do to build Katarina as an assassin. The possible downside of playing Katarina as an assassin is that AP can be a little less compared to a full AP build as there are some changes to the build itself. The good thing is when Death Lotus is on cooldown, you can still spam other abilities like shunpo and auto-attacking to deal an enormous amount of damage.
The core build for the assassin type would include not only deathfire grasp an you mentioned but also lich bane and possibly void staff over abyssal scepter. You will still want Rylai's for survivability as Rabadon's Hat for added AP. Hextech Gunblade will be great for slowing your intended target so it's a great choice as well as sorcerer's shoes. Now, I listed 7 items so you will have to get rid of one. If you want pure reduction of HP based on percentage, such as for tanks, then definitely go with deathfire grasp; otherwise, lich bane will serve better as a reusable nuke with a very short cooldown.
Please ask if you have any other questions and by all means add me in game 1337azn.
