Can win lane, but he doesn;t fit many team comps or strategies. There are simply champions who bring better abilities in team fights. He can work with a really well coordinated team, but even then he's not as strong as he needs to be to be a competitive pick. That said, you could probably get away with playing him in solo queue.
Thanks. I would only play him solo que only, maybe ranked time or two if I can counter someone with him. He just looks so much fun and maybe he will receive buff or two in the future.

Like with other long range mages, people will go OMG NOOB if you're the only one to survive a bad teamfight, with the added effect that you picked Xerath and he is considered bad by a nice deal of players.
Do your thing and move along

Thank you Byron for 2014's loudest laugh up till today
Imo if they start start whining about it, they only show their lack of knowledge over champion.
Dunno yet. Xerath seems like ton of fun and I don't really care if people think it's a bad pick / It's not as strong as others.
I have also thought about Shyvana, but prolly Xerath first. Ty for the opinions btw.

Try Viktor =D.
I think Xerath really is under-appreciated. He can deal quite a bit of damage whilst being a little tanky. His stun isn't to be underestimated and neither is his AoE-triple-ulti. If you can get good with him, you can wreak havoc.
Sadly, his skillset doesn't make him amazing at mobility as most other champions. Since maximising his damage requires him to be immobile for a moment, it makes him far more vulnerable to counter-attack. Since mobility is important in the meta at the moment, he's not seen as an ideal choice.
I really like him, though.
