When playing a melee mid you need to play pretty defensive and just try to farm untill you feel you can go in for a damage trade and come out ahead (generally level 4 for a lot of them, with a few exceptions such as Kassadin). To help you with that, consider getting armor seals and defensive masteries such as Hardiness and Tough Skin to help deal with auto attack harass and minion damage. If you can hit level 6 without falling too far behind, you should have the advantage when going for an all-in against most ranged AP mids as they're generally pretty squishy.

The difference between a damageskill level 1 to a damage skill level 2 is enourmous. So as level 4 Talon or Fiora it is way easier to trade as level 3.
Tho Fioras level 1 trade is my fav <3

not to mention that no one plays fiora mid haha

I can't speak for Fizz because I don't play him very often, and suck 50% of the games I play him in, but with Talon you just take whatever cs you can without taking too much harass, and when you hit lvl 3, jump on 'em and drop their HP as low as possible, leaving 1 message loud and clear in their minds: "Come too close one more time, and I will kill you".

you forget the time where the enemy is skill shot based and you dogde all of them with your E while saying: "Try that again"

Hello, I'm new to the MobaFire community, but I've been playing LoL since late May and am currently at Lv 28. Normally, I play either AP Mid or AD Carry, but recently I've started to explore other roles such as soloing top.

A few days ago I decided to start playing Talon and Fizz mid (once I save up enough IP, but I'm really close). I read some guides here and watched some Youtube vids, but I'm hesitant to play them mid because of their weak early games and the harass they take.

I tried to play Kass mid (versus an Annie) a while back and it was horrible. Every time I went to get a last hit I would get harassed and if I went to harass her back I would deal a lot of damage, but I would end up losing the trade because of minion aggro. This got me thinking that I should stick to ranged champs when playing mid, but I can't play only ranged champs, especially as I being to play Ranked games.

Both Fizz and Talon mid aren't that great until around Lv 4, when they have at least 1 point in all of their non-ultimate abilities. But the problem is getting to Lv 4; when I played the Kass game I wasn't that good (maybe around summoner Lv 18?), and now that I'm more advanced, people will know how to shut down melee mids pre-Lv 4. Every time I've tried to be aggressive I've ended up losing the trade or even dying. When I turret hug I only gain some CS, but I can't keep doing that otherwise the opponent will end up having at least 25 more CS than me by the time the laning phase is over. For some reason, the jungler doesn't come to gank mid often (if we're lucky enough to even have a jungler). What can I do to prevent this?

Fizz is a really solid pick for mid. You'll have to be a bit defensive until at least level 3, but then you can just pop Seastone Trident, jump to them with Playful / Trickster and then dash through them with Urchin Strike. It's a strong burs and you can barely be touched during since you have such insane mobility. I strongly recommend him.

Thanks for all the responses everyone :)

So, I picked up Fizz (sorry Vapora Dark, but trust me Talon is next on my "to buy" list), partially because my friend plays him a lot so I can bother him with my frequent questions and because Talon is free this week, so I can play him as well.

First game as Fizz: went against a Karthus mid, which is kind of an instant win, but I played passively until Lv 3, then got the kill and ended up winning the lane. Second game didn't go too well; played against a Kat and ended up losing very badly.

Later, I did play against a Talon mid (not as Fizz) and I definitely experienced his burst.

Also, when is a good time to harass the opponent in lane? I would think whenever the creep wave is gone (after I've farmed them), but every time I finish a wave another one is already there, so I take a LOT of minion aggro whenever I go in with my Q and W (dont have enough IP to buy armor runes yet).

Troy you NEED armor yellows, they're arguably the most important rune to have overall. o:
And they're super cheap.

You should have bought 9 as fast as you possibly could have as soon as you hit 20 o.o

They should be next on your to buy list, not Talon :P

Talon weak early game?
From lvl 3 onwards he just WREQ's the enemies, the only reason I don't play him often is because in Solo-Q nobody is reasonable enough to go Ap-top.

But he's level 3, and you don't get R till 6.

He's pretty WEQ until 6, when he WREQ's ;)
Tri lane for life.
