Doran's Shield: Top lane item, or ADC item?

[h1]Stat Comparison:[/h1] [[Doran's Blade]]: [color=#ff8000]80 HP[/color] [color=#ff8000]10 AD[/color] [color=#ff8000]5 HP per basic attack[/color] [color=#ff8000][/color] [[Doran's Shield]]: [color=#ff8000]100 HP[/color] [color=#ff8000]10 Armor[/color] [color=#ff8000]5 HP per 5[/color] [color=#ff8000]Unique Passive: Blocks 6 damage from champion basic attacks.[/color] [h2]Now let's Compare them:[/h2] [color=#ff0000]100 HP vs. 80 HP[/color]: Simple choice, 100 is often times greater than 80. Winner: [[Doran's Shield]] [color=#ff0000]5 Armor vs. 10 AD[/color]: Very close. Late game, an AD is > an armor, but armor has greater improvements at lower levels of armor. That 5 armor will cancel out a lot of the enemy armor pen. I think the 10 AD is roughly equal to the 5 armor early on. Winner: [[Doran's Shield]]=[[Doran's Blade]] [color=#ff0000]5 HP5 vs. 5 HP per basic attack:[/color] The regen is equal if you attack once every five seconds. However, you can and will attack more often than that. Winner: [[Doran's Blade]] [color=#ff0000]6 less damage from basic attacks vs. NOTHING:[/color] The 6 damage reduction is the best part of this item, and the Doran's blade has nothing to compare. Also, bot lane is the place that you will be hit with the most basic attacks. The ADC will do most of their damage from basic attacks, and the support will probably will basic attacking you as well. Winner: [color=#ffff00][s]Doran's Blade[/s][/color]... I mean... Venusnaur. [h3]So, by getting a [[Doran's Shield]] we are trading:[/h3] [color=#ff8000]1. 10 AD[/color] [color=#ff8000]2. 5 Life Per attack[/color] [color=#ff8000][/color] For [color=#ff8000]1. 20 HP[/color] [color=#ff8000]2. 5 armor[/color] [color=#ff8000]3. 5 HP per 5[/color] [color=#ff8000]4. 6 damage reduction from champ basic attacks.[/color] So, according to the numbers, I have decided that Doran's shield is MUCH better than a Doran's Blade in lane phase. However, outside of lane phase, Doran's blade is better. Keep in mind that lane phase is the entire POINT of a Doran's item, though. [h2]When to Buy it:[/h2] A. Planning on fighting the enemy lane opponent, or you suspect they will try to fight you.[/color] B. Against heavy poke from the ADC. (i.e. against [[Caitlyn]], or any lane where you are out-ranged significantly)[/color] C. Especially against a support like [[blitzcrank]] [[Leona]] and [[Alistar]] [h2] Who to Buy it on:[/h2] A. [[Caitlyn]]- She outranges other ADs, so you shouldn't be getting shot too much as her. B. [[Graves]]- Sounds like it would be good on him, but he is so dominant in lane that he doesn't need it. Also, the armor is worth less because of his passive. If you feel you need it, it is still a good buy, but you normally won't. C. Farm lane: If both lanes are content to sit and farm, there is no need for this item. [[Graves]] [h2]With Defense Masteries[/h2] If you get the [[block]] and [[unyielding]] masteries, you can get up to [b][i]11 Flat damage reduction against champion basic attacks.[/i][/b] This makes a massive difference early game. In order to do this, you can go either go [color=#ff0000]9-21-0[/color],[color=#ff0000]16-14-0[/color] or [color=#ff0000]14-16-0[/color]. [color=#ff0000]I prefer 14-16-0[/color]. (h4xdefender pointed out that you can get it with 13 points in defense, but I just don't see anything worth putting into offense without committing more than 17 points into it. [h2]TL;DR[/h2] [[Doran's Shield]] is a very strong item for lane phase. If you plan to go double [[Doran's Blade]]s, you may as well go for one of those, and a [[Doran's shield]] (Unless you are [[Caitlyn]]. Also, if you have the right masteries, you can get up to 11 flat damage reduction on champion basic attacks! You can buy a [[cloth armor]] and [[ruby crystal]] for 3 times the armor 80 more HP while costing only 300 more. After you sell them, it will have only costed 233 gold. While [[doran's shield]] costs 285 after being sold. For lulz you can also buy a [[rejuvination beads]] for all of the stats and better of a double [[doran's shield]] for a total of 287 after they have all been sold. Doran's are very cost effective for for 475 gold, but you HAVE to sell them and they sell at very poor rates. So, yeah I would just get a [[cloth armor]], and MAYBE a [[ruby crystal]] if I needed it.[/quote]

[/quote] Takes up two slots instead of one. Isn't obtained as fast. Doesn't have the shield's unique passive.[/quote]
