Never seen a mid riven but the guide in general is well written, looks good and simply makes sense. From you Satella, I was worried about too in-depth stuff or overcomplicated explanations but actually you got out a to-the-point approach which is short and precise. Well done! Unsure on the matchups but that's because I'm unfamiliar with the concept.

Gets a +1 from me.

That's a general announcement, considering most of the early comments were about the Doran's Blade start.

To respond to your points:
  • You are manaless and your enemy is not (Riven also dominates the 1v1 matchups against other manaless champions because they are all melee with worse dueling potential), so if you blow a cooldown to dodge their harass, you come out ahead.
  • Every snare is a skillshot or has considerable travel time except Rune Prison, and can be avoided altogether or dodged safely by dashing towards your turret. In the case of Rune Prison you can dash towards Ryze when you see him try to target you (champions targeting you are outlined in orange) and absorb the damage with your shield.
  • I take Perseverance and max valor first to combat the sustain nerfs. Perhaps you would know this if you read my guide.
  • My other points apply to midlane specifically because midlane has the greatest roam potential, which is half the reason why you would take Riven mid in the first place.

If you play enough Riven, you'd have faced off against a considerable number of other ranged champions top lane like Ryze/ Elise/ Kayle/ Vladimir/ Jayce. Playing her mid is not that different from playing against a ranged champion top lane.

Also hopefully with the Doran's Blade start winning the Best Riven NA tournament people will stop ****ting on it.

I did read your guide, so don't make assumptions. I wouldn't vote, leave such a lengthy comment, and contest the viability of your guide without first reading it. Perseverance is a first tier mastery and isn't all that great. Even at maximum effectiveness, it only offers 1.2 health regen per second, and that's if you're at less than 30% health.

Excluding Ryze, I have played against all of the champions you listed top lane as Riven and more. Each one of them worth their salt used their range to their advantage and presented a considerable challenge. I think taking Riven mid is essentially taking her out of her element, and she'll be countered more often than not. You take a champion to a lane to fulfill a role in which they will excel at, not to fulfill a role in which they can potentially do well at under certain circumstances possibly maybe.

Now, I will concede one thing. If someone were to be dead set on taking Riven mid, they should follow your guide.

I understand that I'm not going to change your mind, I mean you wrote an entire guide. You're obviously very passionate about this and I commend you for defending your opinions. I still disagree with you though, so lets agree to disagree.

I never said anything against starting with Doran's Blade as Riven. I'm not sure if you're telling me that or just tacking it on as a general announcement.

I respect your opinion, but why do you feel this way? IMO Riven's kit is very good for mid lane due to the following reasons:

  • High mobility (Dodging skillshots that many mid laners rely on)
  • Low cooldown shield (Negates harass from ranged champions, makes trades favorable, hard counters burst mages by making it effectively impossible to 100-0 you)
  • Manaless (cannot be forced out of lane even if she has to use skills often, only need lifesteal for sustain)
  • AD (easy farming, higher damage to turrets, much better sustained damage in long engagements)
  • Two forms of AoE CC
  • Very good 1v1 potential
  • Very good 1v2 potential (Turn a gank into a double kill)
  • No dependence on blue buff (Allows jungler to take it or feed it to someone else)
  • Excellent ganker when roaming
  • Excellent teamfight utility and damage
  • Excellent counterjungle potential (Mid lane has the shortest route to both sides of the enemy jungle)

What is your rationale for stating that Riven shouldn't be played mid lane? I'm interested in hearing it.

I personally do not think Riven belongs in the middle lane. It would take a very specific scenario for her to be viable, such as going up against another AD mid.

  • Yes, she is quite mobile. However, 75% of her mobility lies within her main source of damage, Broken Wings. I don't think you can afford to constantly exhaust your damage potential to dodge harass
  • Yes, Valor is good at negating harass. However, it cannot be used when snared or stunned. Most if not all burst mages are able to and will not "burst" you unless you are affected by one of the two conditions.
  • Given, resourceless champs are generally able to stay in lane longer. However, Riven's health regen was nerfed to the ground, and life steal isn't a reliable source of sustain during the laning phase.
  • I agree with Riven's AD advantages, though these things could be said for any lane.
  • Two forms of AoE CC which are both very short range. The reason AD champs like Kha'Zix, Pantheon, Talon, and Zed are successful mid lane is due to their ranged harass and their ability to close the gap between themselves and their opponent quickly and/or subtly. Riven's gap close is rather flashy and noticeable, and it takes significantly longer to execute.

All of your other points could be said for Riven in any other lane and/or other resourceless champs. They are not strengths that are specific to Riven or specific to mid lane.

Updated for Patch 3.6. This is the new OP sustain start as far as I can tell.

Tried Rejuvenation Bead start with 5 pots and 1 ward, didn't like it. The only good item it builds into for Riven is Tiamat which I do not rush, and losing 1 inventory slot to a 180 gold item for half of the game isn't exactly a sweet deal.

Hi! Teh Grazzh0pper here with a review of your guide, also featuring a new banner since people started to use my banner :/.

Content:

Cheat Sheet

Consider adding various types of starts (9 pots 2 wards, ur dorans start) etc cause people might not look at the notes.
Don't see how 15 seconds of reduced cooldown is better than extra survivability, but I suppose it's a question that will be answered later.

Masteries

You could justify your choice of 8-1 Defensive-Utility Masteries, cause it's a bit odd not considering expanding to tier 3 of the defensive tree.

Items

You could go more in-depth of certain item pickups and uses such as Randuin's Omen and Guardian Angel. Newbies who view your guide might be unsure of when to pickup such items.

Skill tips

If you say that Broken Wings is Riven's bread and butter then why do you max it second?

Other than that your content is sound.

4.5/6

Appearance:

In general, it is really good. I like your use of pictures to demonstrate certain parts of the guide.

However, most parts of the guide seems really close together, which makes your guide a bit unpleasant to the eye.

There are significant "walls of text" in certain parts your guide(especially the laning section).

2.5/3

Does it bring anything new to the table?
Mid lane Riven is great! I tried your build and tips and I went 8-3-5 in a high elo normal match (though I forgot to screenshot :/)

Overall:8/10
UPVOTED.

Overall, this guide is really good, just take note of certain things that I have mentioned.

Like what I say to all other guide, you do not have to follow everything I say. Just take what you think will be useful to the guide.

With a bit more recognition and work, this guide can easily become the top Riven guide out there!

Yep, mid is really short. It's not like a side lane where you can freeze a good distance past the first tower and still be comfortably out of second tower range.

Exceptionally hard in mid-lane, nevertheless a good tip.
